Has anyone used a data recovery firm?
If so who would you suggest, and how much did it cost you?
I'm looking to recover an entire 80Gb HDD and have asked for a quote from a company called 'ontrack'.

I've used both ontrack and Vogon. Both have been fine.
Work reasons so I dont know costs.
Never used one but i seem to remember some figure along the lines of about 5-600 quid ??
I think we recovered about 10-30GB and it was something in the region of £400...
If that's the case it would be cheaper if I bought the tools and did it myself.
Data recovery is indeed mind buggeringly expensive. Every time I tell a user who demands it becuase their work is "So important and critical to the company" just exactly how much it's going to cost the company (bearing in mind his FD will need to approve it) it suddenly becomes a lot less critical :)
its not going to help you in this case but this is why it can be so vital to take regular backups.
One of the firms may not charge too much for a clean room diagnostic... then they will be able to give you an estimate of the full costs.
Well ontrack want to charge me £75 for a diagnostic and between £395 and £995 for any recoverable data dependant upon complexity.
£75 sounds about right.
Data recovery is expensive.
You have to think what the value of the data you are trying to recover is :)
if its your livelyhood , then a few hundred quid is nothing !
Indeed, the instance I was referring to was about 6yrs of emails, 3-4yrs of research papers + personal notes and the last 7months of current research.
That is a lot of important data to a university professor.
Needless to say he bought himself some space on the universities SAN after he got the recovered data back!
It will cost you at least £450
