Lightning Strike!
I have an Abit NF7-S mobo and am running an XP2500+ CPU.
A couple of weeks ago my house got hit by lightning... The next day i turned on my pc, it booted to the Windows screen, i tried to run a prog and it switched itself off, no power nothing happening.
Afterwards i tried turning on and it wouldn't even start, no led's no fans. I concluded that it was the power supply that had been fried and so i got a new one and fitted it the other day.
I switched on the pc and it booted, i ran a program, everything seemed ok and sorted out.
However after about 15mins the pc failed, the monitor displayed "no signal" but this time the led's on the front of the tower stayed lit and the fans carried on going. I am now concerned that it could be a mobo/cpu/graphics fault.
Any ideas?
Thanks for your help,
Adam

Have you got other components which you can swap out? That would be your best way of finding where the fault lies...

no, i havn't, that's why im trying to find out which component it is likely to be rather than just guessing and buying, a new cpu for emaple, which won't solve my problem...

Got a modem/network card in there?
-
i've got an old dial up modem but it wasnt connected at the time and hasnt been used for ages
could this make a difference?
it will still power on and boot up again, and again, but just goes blank after a short while
-
pull the modem, any visible marks on the board? Try a cmos clear, 1 stick of ram etc
-
ok thanks i'll try you suggestions
never done a cmos clear before, will it reset my bios changes?
can anybody else shed any light?
-
Yes, it will clear them, remember to power down/unplug from wall
-
This is just a guess but it could be one of your fan(cpu, graphic card)that's got damaged by lightning therefore overheating your system? Check all the fans if they are working properly, especially graphic card fan.
-
ok, think i'll make the cmos part a last resort, got my cpu slightly overclocked and it took me ages of running prime 95 tests when i first built it to get it super stable.
just spoke to one of my friends and he thinks it could be a graphics problem because it still keeps running, i.e the fans and led's stay lit and the monitor is not a blank screen but reads "no signal found" as if no card is recognised.
This seems to make sense and seems logical i guess...
What do you guys think?
Thanks again for all your help!
My graphics cars is pretty basic (system was built to make music so graphics was where i saved money" it hasn\'t got a fan on it just a large heatsink
-
Only way to solve this, as always is to get in round about it and start eliminating, different card, single stick mem/dif slots etc, unplug everything, just a minimal to see if it posts. Personally I would pull the cmos first
-
okay i\'ll go down the cmos first route, i guess i\'ll just make a note of all the settings in the bios 1st.
what effect does the cmos reset actually have?
-
So it is posting, you can get into the bios?
-
ye, can get into bios...
pc runs as normal, perfectly for a short while then switches off, with fans and led\'s still working and screen as detailed above.
???
Cheers for your replies:bowdown:
-
he says he can get to windows, its just a matter of time b4 the monitor blanks
-
Well I would take a note of your bios settings for now. Check all cables, make sure fans are all working, graphics included, get into windows and keep an eye on temps.
edit
do you have the 4pin power plugged in on the board?
