Computer turns on, by itself, spooky.

    Hi guys,

Having a bit of a spooky time with my computer recently as its started turning itself on randomly. For a while it has sometimes turned itself back on instantly after I've shut it down or hibernated it, but its also starting to do it out of nowhere now.

I checked the BIOS and there's no Wake Up time or Wake On LAN or anything like that enabled (its an old MSI KT6 Delta Socket A). Other than that, I'm guessing that the PSU might be on its way out?

    Ta

    Jamie

Flaky connection somewhere maybe...? Or a short on the power on pins of the motherboard...?

You say it turns on randomly, could it be after a phonecall?

Some (if not all nowadays, I'm not sure) BIOSes support Wake on Ring and other Wake functions, if one of those is active it could explain it, so have a peek and see

Heh, my faulty motherboard used to do that. Got into bed and it turned itself on, I almost jumped out the window !

Not sure what it was caused by, but I reseating the power button plugs multiple times and it didn't help.

If you have power on via a keyboard press, this could be your answer, if you have pressed a key on the keyboard, if so delete the action in bios.

Mine used to turn on when a phonecall was received, becuase the modem was plugged in. I just turned the option for wake on ring off in the BIOS, took me ages to figure it out though. It drove me mad.

Pull off the case power button connector, see if it still does it (could be sticking). One of the MSIs here keeps turning itself on (no peripherals attached, or pin headers), presume it's just gone a bit queer with age .
