Why does turning my room light on turn my speakers off?

When i hit the lightswitch in my room, my speakers (altec lansing 4.1 jobbies) turn off then back on, kinda half-second thing...


is it something to do with the energy-saving bulb kicking out something the speakers pickup (infra-red or something?)


All seems really wierd, perhaps its just shoddy wiring

Sounds weird as they should be on different circuits...

I've seen amp's reset everytime cheap dimmer-switches are used bercause of the noise they introduce.

yeah, they're on different circuits so it shouldnt be that, its not a dimmer, just a straight on/off switch... oh and it seems like its intermittant - just tried doing a quick on/off of the light and the music stayed on :S

run an extension lead to your room from downstairs (or somewhere else a long way from it) for the Altecs, just for a test.

Then see if it happens.

Also, try changing that energy saving bulb for a standard one

But make changes ONE AT A TIME!

Havent got an extension lead - student house, will maybe bring one back at christmas... All the lights in the house are low-energy ones too... i'm thinking of putting a box (or something) over the speaker with the IR reciever on it, see if that stops it

.. right, well covering the speaker ir-port thing stops them from turning off/on, so I'm pretty sure it has to be something to do with the low-energy lightbulb... really wierd

It could be electromagnetic interferance from the lightswitch coming on. Not sure if it's safe to do but if you turn the light half on just to the point where the light comes on, if you flicker it a bit can you hear a crackling sound, if you can i think that is electricity arcing, which causes the interferance, which maybe what your speakers are picking up

My guess is that the ballast of compact flourecent gives a burst of electromagentic radiation when it ignites the light.

I had a problem where the backlight of my LCD TV stopped my cable box recieveing IR signals from the remote. In the end i had to get a different brand of cable box. You might also be able to get some sort of filter to put in front of the IR reciever on the speakers.

Its not a major problem, it's just a rather wierd thing the speaker remote works fine with the light on, its just the initial split-second turning on/off which is odd
