    Think I Have a Virus

my pc is new, spec is good, but i keep getting this strange thing where everything freezes for about 10-15 seconds and i cant do anything. happens every hour or so, or quite a lot when i play a game for the first hour, then seems to stop. this leads me to believe i have a virus. ive run ewido, ad-aware, AVG and a-squared, all free versions only, which dont seem to have cleared the problem. i dont have a firewall. some advice much appreciated. i'll buy a virus checker if theres a particularly good one, price isnt that much of a problem, if its worth getting

Sounds like a ram issue to me,

But if your been freely going around the net without any anti virus your asking for somthing.

    I use avast

As for your memory ' Memtest '? I cannot remeber exacly but i believe that program checks the stability of your ram

Dont forget other spyware packages too, Spyboy, Spysweeper, Spyware Doctor, Adaware, Pest Patrol, etc., Sometimes it takes more than one to catch the rat.

However, other hardware things to check apart from RAM, might include the CPU temp, IRQ conflicts (sysinfo), PSU low power to the system, loose cables.

    Happy Hunting !

    thanks

seems like ad-aware finds something new every time i run it which is a bit worrying

does anyone know of a good firewall ?

also, NOD32 finds a number of files that cant be opened and one that is locked

The best firewall IMHO is a hardware one, as found in all (most ?) routers.

My Netgear makes my PC completely stealthed (if I go that far, which I usualy don't).

Otherwise, a freebie might be ZoneAlarm...

Try AVG Free 7.5 (free anti-virus) - swear by this program, do a full system scan see if it picks anything up.

strangely enough running ad-aware every day along with having the scanner of nod32 running and running a-squared and ewido (which both found extra stuff) has made things a lot better. the signal from the wireless network is also stronger which is weird
