The main point was not that I didn't want to buy XP per se, rather that I didn't want to shell out £150 as a student, when I plan to legally buy Vista in the near future, meaning £150 for a few months of OS...it's expensive to a student who only has £350 in the bank to last until Christmas.

Either way I rang up and explained the situation and they activated it for me with no problem at all so i'm happy Oh, actually they did ask "how many computers is the software installed on" and i said just this one, as is true, and he said that's fine so it's all sorted now

No, I'm _debating_ whether the black and white nature of your _arguement_
while I understand what your suggesting - it is infact that black and white. Those are the terms and conditions of the license.

In your example it would be ok if I robbed you of your possesions to see if I may want to buy you a new set in later life when I'm not skint.

sorry to drag this thread back up again, however a recent post on the register about the vista EULA may prove interesting reading for the debaters in this thread - I'm not saying this is the XP licesnse, I'm saying that all that has been discussed in this thread is moving forward with vista
