Intel Core Duo vs AMD Athlon Dual Core

am planning to buy a new PC...which one is better between an Intel Core Duo & AMD Dual Core if we are to consider compatibilty (other programs, Vista, etc.), fan noise, performance and long-termability.

Do you mean Intel Core 2 Duo?

With a couple of caveats, the most common view is that the Intel Core 2 Duo is best using those criteria.

It's definately the core 2 duo's. The lowest end chips (1.86GHz) can OC up to 3GHz.

depends, eg if you are gonna use an existing monitor and what sort of graphics you want.

For example, when I next get paid I'm going to get an E6300 with 2 gigs of ram and a dual screen 17" TFT setup. That's gonna be about £1000 through. What do you plan on doing on the core 2 comp?

Take a look at the Intel Quad Core article that's just been put on the site - http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=7129 - it compares the Athlon's to Core 2 Duo's and Core Quad's.

The Core 2 Duo's come up trumps every time over AMD.

theres someone on another thread trying to shift:

    athlon xp 2600+
    1GB Ram
    ATI X1800
    DVD-RW

that would do everything you listed fine. no need to buy a new comp your only going to screw up. there asking about 100 for it although £55 and some beer has been offered, guess you could try and beat that?

    why another thread? retard...

I'd go for core 2 duo over AMD at the moment.

if we are to consider compatibilty (other programs, Vista, etc.)
Both should be equal. Both will have no compatability problems. AMDs have been out longer, so have more proven compatability, but the intels have shown no problems so far.

    fan noise,
Depends what fan you put on. They both run cool, so should be quiet with the stock cooler. Gfx will probably be noisier though...

    performance
Both perform very well. Core 2 duo performs better. But costs more. The direct processor cost is similar, but core motherboards cost quite a bit more.

    and long-termability.
Both will have good long-termability, though the core performance will help it last a bit more maybe.

I am a hard-core gamer, so would pay the extra for a core system. But the gfx card is probably more important than the processor.
If you are looking for a cheap but decent system for internet, films, some gaming, go AMD.
The better performance of the core 2 will benefit you if you are doing serious gaming, video editing or similar.

Core 2 duo is the best for now. No doubt.
