    Can't see any videos

Something's happened that's stopping videos appearing on my PC. Anything in Windows Media Player, RealPlayer won't show, although I can hear the audio. Also, any website I visit that has an embedded video, I can't see either but again I can hear the audio.

I have Adobe Premier Elements video editing software and I can watch my videos in that ok.

    Any help please?

i don't think it is a codec issue, not if you can play them in Elements.

I think something has happened to DirectX on you system or one of the other video rendering interfaces.

In the desktop properties, go to Dettings -> Advanced -> Troubleshooting and start moving the slider to the left one notch at a time. Test your video play back at each step to see if things improve.

Also, download MediaPlayer Classic (http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...ckage_id=84358) and see how that works.

In View -> Options -> Playnacl -> Output you can change the video renderer so that might help narrow down what is going on.

So If it plays in adobe elements, does that mean the codec is installed on the PC and should work in any program allowing playback of the filetype?

I had a similar problem a while back and after downloading pack after pack codecs (blind, admittedly), I just gave up...

Digging a hole there - never use codec packs, certainly not blindly and desperately.

Try FFDShow, and let it handle most videos. Alternatively, download VLC and let it open videos until you sort the problem. I've no idea what's causing it - wierd one. Do WMVs work?

yes, if it plays in Elements the codec is installed. Elements will be using a different video rendering engine than WMP and RealPlayer.

If you have been blindly installing codec packs then something could quite easily have screwed up your complete system.

    Narrowed it down

    Thanks to Funkstar.

I tried the Troubleshooting tab in Screen settings and moved the slider left. At the point where the slider disabled DirectDraw & Direct3D accelerations, the videos played perfectly.

OK, so any advice on what to do now?

    Thanks again.

    Ran DXDIAG

I ran dxdiag and went through direct3d and directdraw diagnostics, all tested ok. But videos still refuse to play unless I disable accelerations in display settings.

no idea how to fix it to be honest, you might actualy be best re-installing windows. Someone else might have a solution though.

Have you tried MediaPlayer Classic and changing the video renderer yet?

    Media Player Classic

Download this and played around with settings, I finally found I could play videos in this app using VMR7 (windowed) option.

Not sure how this helps because I still can't see them in Media Player 11.

However, I shall continue investigating and let you know how I get on.

    Thanks again.
