Anyone setup RAID on a DFI LanParty UT nF4 Ultra-D?

..cos i'm having an odd issue.

I've created an NVRAID set as per usual, XP see's this during install (I had an integrated XP with NVRAID drivers from my other system) and gets almost all the way through the install to the second reboot (after start menu items have been installer etc) and thenafter just blue screens every time you try and boot it.

I'm at a loss to explain it - my next move is to try and update the BIOS (if it's old - not checked) and then try using the NVRAID drivers as supplied by DFI on their site.

The board works fine if you just install XP onto a single SATA driver in non-raid config..

    Weird or what?

The board passes memtest fine which sorta eliminates the RAM (obvious place to start) as being flaky..

nForce 4 has had issues with Seagates recently (I had) where XP gets installed and then wont boot properly. Maybe Maxtors do too sometimes?

I needed firmware for the drives.

Can I ask if you've tried installing XP on ONE disk...not in RAID? Make sure it's not the drives and the mobo conflicting.

Yeah "The board works fine if you just install XP onto a single SATA drive in non-raid config." I did... It's only when I try RAID that things get 'interesting'

I've run these drives fine in both my A8N32 and my previous A8N boards (both ASUS) which is the weird bit

    From your link

"Compatibility issues with Maxtor DiamondMax 9/10 and nForce4
    Published on December 2nd, 2005

It seems that there is a serious compatibility issue between some of the Maxtor DiamondMax 9/10 SATA series with an early firmware revision and some nForce4 based motherboards. Some of the effected motherboards are the ASUS A8N series, the DFI LAN Party NF4, and some MSI nForce4 based boards. The problem lies between onboard SATA controller and the hard drive. The workaround is a firmware upgrade for the hard drive. However, we tried to grab the update and for some reason Maxtor gave us a hard time when trying to locate it. For unknown reasons, they are not offering the update on their website. This is a pretty nasty move. The compatibility issue can cause data corruption, random lock ups, disappearance of the Hard disk, and read/write issues which may lead to a serious data lose. If you are experience it, try to look for a certain BIOS update, if you can’t find it, you will have to replace the hard disk or use a 3rd party SATA Controller. Maxtor, you have a website with download section. Use it, instead of giving your customers a hard time."

But if that's the case then how in the heck did it work with my other nForce boards?

    you got lucky

Mean time...back the RAID issue. What drivers are you using? The Mobo supplied ones? Does it install the SATA driver AND the RAID driver from one floppy?

the nvraid software version can be updated if you have the latest bios. It's embedded. I found the forums over at nforcershq much more useful than dfi-street.com fwiw for general troubleshooting but there are some good updated bios's at dfi-street.com.

Well I resolved this - and not without headaches - DFI boards are 'interesting' shall we say. I slipstreamed the DFI sourced F6 raid disk (which contains both drivers - bus and raid I think as I remember) into the XP install disk. I then reflashed the bios - which although it said it was the same version it was an 'A' revision (I love it when companies don't bother with versioning correctly) which also updated the NVRAID bios to 5.50 (i think). After reflashing I rebooted and got a black screen (oh dear not good i thought) which turned out to be the 'full screen logo' (black on black?) being switched on in the BIOS - this turned off I could see the POST screen again. Installed Windows and.. no crash. So my guess is one or more of the following was true:

    1. the bios was corrupt
    2. the bios was out of date and updating the NVRAID controller bios solved it.
    3. one or more bios settings were incompatible (as i reset them to defaults)
    4. the integrated drivers on my XP install disc solved the problem.

My feeling is that it was 2 as the previous slipstreamed XP works fine on two other nforce 4 systems (both ASUS)

BTW the drives were manu'd in 2003

Anyway thanks for your help folks

Cheers for that - I think (see previous post) that I solved it that way
