try installing the klite package of codecs http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...Codec_Pack.htm
DVD decoding requires a patent license from the MPEG Licensing Authority, which costs money. Generally, you install a paid DVD player application which contains the required codecs (e.g. PowerDVD) or use a patent-violating player like VLC. Or, as killie99 suggested, you get a warezed codec.
Is K-Lite considered Warez?
I just use VLC..
this has only happened recently why didnt we have to pay for codecs before?
You have always had to pay for a DVD codec/player as its down to dobly etc license which the programmers must pay to use. Usually you pick one up with you machine or DVD drive. Scan sell the nvidia codec or powerdvd/windvd for a few pounds for 2.1 or more for full 5.1 and even more for DTS.
Please. For the love of god. Dont use codec packs.
I'll recommend PowerDVD :)
most codecs involve some level of patent violation. ever ripped a CD using the high quality LAME MP3 encoder? that's a violation right there.
VLC continues to exist partly because nobody's gone after it (patents must be actively protected, they don't just happen), and partly because it's developed in so many different countriesd with different policies towards patents that it'd be an absolute nightmare to even try & shut them down
i'm not saying i don't use VLC, but it does all sorts of unlicensed things like region-free DVD playback.
VLC FTW IMO
(wow look how short I can make a sentance)
