No display when memory placed in DIMM0 of Channel A

I have an Intel DG965RY motherboard. It runs fine when I place my memory module in any of the slots other than Channel A, DIMM 0 (e.g. CA-D1, CB-D0). However, Intel Manageability Engine (required for thermal monitoring etc.) doesn't start because of its requirement of DIMM 0 of Channel A being always populated.

The problem is that whenever I place my memory in Channel A, DIMM 0, my display stops working, i.e., monitor is always on stand-by (no error message of "No-Signal" either). I'm using the built in Intel Graphics Accelerator for video output.

Sometimes (I have no idea why), it does show something on display. But then, it randomly reboots the CPU every now and then.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The 965 seems to be a bit more fiddly about memory than some motherboards. Could you fill in your 'my system' details so that we can know a bit more about the components you're putting in there?

I wonder if it's a problem with the board/cpu expecting dual channel capable memory when you populate the first slot - do you have any options in the BIOS to disable dual channel mode? If you've only got one stick of ram that could be the problem.
