How do i do this?
The samsung site says the monitor can do this resolution @ that refresh rate, but at the moment im limited to 60hz. I've unticked the 'hide rates that this monitor does not support' but its no there, and I tried adding a custom resolution but it fails to add.
Is is something to do with single/dual link?

I have the same monitor and in the manual I just d/loaed off the Samsung webby it says optimal resolution 1680 x 1050@ 60Hz and maximum resolution is the same, can't seem to find where it say's different, probably need to adjust the brightness or use a different magic bright setting if it's effecting your eyes.

refresh rate is how many times the picture is "mapped out" on a CRT. each frame is mapped more than once, as the beam fades pretty quick, so it goes back and re-draws the same frame.

as LCD's are backlit, the light is constant and each pixel is just like a door, open or closed. It doesn't dim, therefore refresh rate doesn't apply, and doesn't actually make a difference.

on a CRT, only a single pixel is drawn at a time - tracing from top-left to bottom-right in rows. 60hz means "traces from top left to bottom right 60 times a second". "flicker" means you can see the tracer moving, rather than your eye being fooled into seeing a static image
on a TFT, there is no tracer - the entire image is displayed all at the same time, and changes in one go. if a static image like a wallpaper is displayed, then literally NOTHING happens on a TFT - it stays as it is, whereas on a CRT, it still traces and "flickers"
so a TFT has no refresh rate.
what it *DOES* have is a "response time", which is the length of time the pixels take to change from one pixel to another, and is unaffected by your graphics card (in theory, a 6msec response time is "equivalent" to 167hz or 167 frames per second).
Whilst I don't disagree with any of the above, changing the screen refresh rate does do something.
At 1280x1024 @ 60Hz everything gets a little blurry, but at 72Hz on the same resolution, everything is crystal clear. My experience anyway.
