Editing AVC on a PC ? (M2TS file extension)

Having captured video on a Sony HDR-SR1...

...I am now beginning to think that there is no package in the world that can actually edit the files it creates

It seems that none of the usual suspects (Adobe, Microsoft, Ulead and Avid) have agreements in place to use this proprietary technology...

...and even Sony's own VEGAS v7.0 does not read the file format

    HELP !

Apparently you can strip out the proprietary information and convert to MPEG-2, which you could then edit in your preferred package. See http://www.sonyhdvinfo.com/showthread.php?t=7067

Although, I don't own such a lovely camera, so haven't tried this myself, but the theory seems ok.

Thanks for the feedback - but I think there is a snag...

The captured AVCHD video seems to be 16:9 and when you convert to MPEG2 using the supplied Sony utility - it seems to change the aspect ration to 4:3 as it moves to SD

Maybe I am a numbnutz and have missed something - but I think this is the case

If you really wanted a laugh - I could tell you that it is not happy saving video to anywhere apart from 'My Pictures' - and that when you try to 'push' the issue it says 'Viewed Folders Only' - but when you search the Sony web site/HTML help /PDF manual etc for 'Viewed Folders' - it says 'No match found'

When the laughter subsides - I could then hit you with 'there is no FireWire socket - but Sony were kind enough to supply an HDMI connection point...

...and the Sony Centre price for a 1m cable to go into this socket is only £45

Thanks for the link - but that looks like moving from one proprietary format to another

My research leads me to believe that Sony will release an update for Vegas in the next 3-6 months that will allow their HD editing software to process the HD footage that their HD camera produces...

    ...miracle !

    FOLLOW UP

Not being able to edit HD content captured on the HDR-SR1 was only the start of the fun

There also seems to be an issue with the 'time line'

I will be getting 'expert help' on this today but, basically, when you import SD video from the HDR-SR1 and try to use something like Premiere to edit it...

...the synch gets lost every 20 seconds or so

I fixed it the first time (manually) by unhooking the audio and visual to 'nudge' one along until it synched up again

Unfortunately, after only ~20 seconds - the synch slips again

Using the same system (3.73EE etc) for video captured on a Sony TVR25 I get no issues at all...

...so I am looking at the Sony HDR-SR1's capture method as the most likely suspect

Arrow Re: Editing AVC on a PC ? (M2TS file extension)

Now there are various editing software which can suppot AVCHD (.mts/m2ts) video files.

Option 1: Adobe promiere CS 5, one professional program which can natively support AVCHD footages from camcorder.

    Optional 2. Aunsoft Final Mate
It is one AVCHD video editing software which is recommended to me by my friend. It is not quite professional but quite easy to use. Simple editing options, just use it.
