A Strange Sound problem
hi there
i suddenly realised that my email sound had stopped working and then i went on to the net to the site u tube to view some videos.
i can't hear any sounds on there i do see the videos no problem.. i have re-installed my sound driver and re-installed shockwave and java.. ac3 codecs have been removed and re-installed. when i look in my sounds for my mail sound there is no choice for it in the list for items to have a sound assiqned to it which is well strange. my mp3's play fine and my films in avi and mpg the sounds ok.
i am at a loss i have even re-installed internet explorer.
and help would be great..
cheers Evilb...

What email client are you using? If its Outlook or Outlook Express the see here for a run through of how its supposed to be done... http://email.about.com/cs/outlooktips/qt/et112102.htm

The client i am using is Outlook Express
the bit that says
"Select Control Panel from the Start menu." DONE
"Make sure you are in Classic View." DONE
"Double-click Sounds and Audio Devices." DONE
"Go to the Sounds tab." DONE
"Highlight New Mail Notification in the Program Events list."
the new mail notification is NOT in the Evens list so i can't
highlight it thats one of my problems.....
"Select a sound from the Sounds list, or use the Browse button to find a sound not in the list.
Click OK." can't do this bit because theres nothing to highlight.. do you see my problem....

Erm yes!
What sound scheme is it set to? Try changing that to windows default if it isn't already... If that doesn't work then possibly the registry needs looking at...
--EDIT--
Speaking of the registry... Open Regedit and look here: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\EventLabels\MailBeep
Should be an entry thats called DispFileName with a value of "@mmsys.cpl,-5837"
It should also crop up here: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache
This time the value from the previous registry key will be the name (@mmsys.cpl,-5837) and the value should be "New Mail Notification"
It will or should also appear for all the users in the same place as the first one e.g. "Other User ID"\AppEvents\EventLabels\MailBeep

hi there
its on windows default m8 other sounds are there and do work for other events but not for the email...
"Open Regedit and look here: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\EventLabels\MailBeep"
there isn't a mailbeep folder..
none of the above in your email are in my registry..
would it help if i re-installed windows xp? over the top?
cheers for your help..

Yeah probably...
Or you could slap those two entries into your registry which would be considerably quicker! (They just tell XP what entries to populate in the sounds control panel applet).
I would opt for the registry edit (back it up first though) as it will take you 2 minutes and will almost certainly fix the problem. If you want I can give you screen shots of the two entries from my registry so you can enter them without fear of a fubar situation! drop me an email address via pm if so...
