'Blue screen of death' when I plug my M-audio keystation 49e into comp :s

Hi everyone.
I've just built myself a new desktop system, and have just tried to use my (tried and tested) M-audio Keystation 49e USB-powered keyboard.
My system consists of the following:

Akasa 400w Ultra quiet PSU
2 x 512mb PC6400 OCZ memory
Intel Core 2 Duo e6400 processor
Abit AB9 Pro motherboard
M-audio Firewire Solo external (firewire powered) sound card
Palit 7900GS 512mb DDR2/3 graphics card
320gb sata hard drive
Cheapo Sony DVD writer
Running XP Pro

The 'Blue screen of death error' reads:

I've tried plugging the keyboard into every USB port, but with each one the computer crashes to the 'Blue screen of death' as soon as it starts to find the device. I've unchecked the 'allow windows to turn off power to the USB port' checkbox for all the USB ports, but this has also made no difference at all. I have also tried to connect the keyboard through a powered USB hub, but this has also made no difference.

Does anyone know what the problem might be?

The BSOD error would help :)

Have you installed the chipset drivers for the motherboard or are you using the ones from Windows Update?

*nods* sounds like USB drivers (if you've already installed any keyboard specific ones) are your first port of call. I'd also check for an updated BIOS for your motherboard. If none of that works, can you verify that other USB devices don't cause a problem?

I hate to sound like an idiot, but what name would the chipset be under in the device manager. I have found a 'uGuru Micro Processor'. Is this it? If so, it has the Abit driver installed.

I'm already looking at updating the BIOS, although I'm tryign to find out how to update it using a pen drive (any help would be appreciated lol).
I've tried every USB device that I own, and have no problems with them. I had the same type of problems (BSOD)with this keyboard when I used to plug it into my old laptop, but the problem was solved when I plugged it into a specific port on the computer every time.

Could it be your power supply? If your system is overclocked I doubt the psu could take it.

If you have a bad usb driver on the system then lots of horrible random USB-related BSODs are possible. On my WinXP machine if I plug my USB key post-boot I get a BSOD - start the machine with the key already in it and it works.

The problem is the design of the XP USB stack itself. If you get a BSOD when plugging in a a device it doesn't necessarily mean THAT device has the bad driver - it may be being FUBAR'd by a previously loaded driver.

I turn the computer off, plug the keyboard in, and then turn the computer back on. However, the computer still restarts after loading up.
Also, my system is not overclocked, so wasn't thinking it was the PSU.

If you can use the keyboard when your brother has logged on then it sounds like a problem with your user profile that it causing a conflict. Does the BSOD occur when you have entered your user/password and waiting for the desktop to load? If so then Windows is running winlogon which loads any user specific drivers etc.

You probably don't want to delete your user profile but you could create a new user, if that works copy any of your data from My Documents etc to the new user and use that account instead.

No, I was using my brother's computer when I posted my last message. I've updated the BIOS, and stopped windows being able to turn off power to USB ports when they aren't being used. Does anyone have any idea what it might be?
By the way, I also had this problem on another computer (laptop).

Sorry, didn't realise you were still having issues - download the Intel chipset driver from http://www2.abit.com.tw/page/uk/down...CHTEXT=ab9+pro and install it. Once installed reboot and try again.

M-Audio stuff is renown for being fussy about what you plug it into. My soundcard took 2 motherboards until I found one that it worked with (which, incidentally, isn't working at the moment).

Thanks for the info. I'm not really willing to change components around, just because a simple midi keyboard works. The more I mention the words 'simple midi keyboard', I can't understand why it doesn't just work lol
I have already updated the chipset driver, which did absolutely nothing.
I have one question though. I plugged pen drives of mine into USB ports today, and windows came up with the 'This device can perform faster...' notice, suggesting that I had plugged it into a USB1 port. Is there some way that the motherboard thinks it has USB1 ports instead of USB2?? If so, is there a driver or something I can download to tell the motherboard/pc that they're USB2 ports?
