    Unhappy high pitched continuous noise

    High pitched continuous noise

My PC has developed this problem which sometimes occurs when
it’s idle but most frequently when playing games online.
The Ping goes sky high and the frame rate drops.

I was told that this signalled a problem with my hard disk (failing),
so I installed a new one and took the old one out.
The problem initially seemed to disappear but has now returned,
and seems to be getting more frequent.

    Please help and advise….

Some boards can exhibit such noises under heavy load from around the CPU/RAM area (it was never pinned down as far as I'm aware) - the ASUS A8R32-MVP Deluxe was particularly notorious among recent boards, though it didn't effect all.

Otherwise, I've had a Seagate hard drive doing that, but only under heaving reading. PSU's too, especially if it's an elcheapo Q-Tec or something (Hexus's review mentions loud screeching noises before their Q-Tec failed with a loud bang).

can u tell where the noise is coming from, I appreciate this isnt always easy but is it the system speaker or a specific peripheral (some gfx cards have their own speaker).

Also have u checked for heat issues on the CPU, gfx and NB, is the system free from crap, i.e dust/fluff, is airflow ok. Let us know what u find

You need to stop the fans one by one and see where the noise is coming from mate. It could be your hard drive. Just a matter of putting your ear up close!

    Na I'm not using a 8800GTX (I wish)

And It's not a dust problem.

I think it maybe a heat problem but...

Of course since I posted this question the bloo** thing has stopped making the damn noise. Maybe it knows I'm onto it. Anyhow the phillips screwdriver is ready for when it inevitably starts up again. Then I'll be back here....

Ive got two kids that do this, the temptation to bypass the PSU and just wire the buggers in the 240v mains is tempting but the wife may be a little pissed at me...plus the smell could take weeks to get rid of

After running "mother board monitor" I was a little shocked to see the CPU running at 62'C when Idle! I've given the fan and heat sink a good clean. But its still running hot.

The PC is about 5 year old so whats the cheapest solution to cool it down?

I'm hoping the answer is to apply some new thermal paste and not get a new fan and heat sink!

check thats not Fahrenheit. being from the green side of the room id expect anything running in the 60's to error like crazy.

also, the noise it was making, would you say its "fan noise" or "electric noise (if you hear it you'll know what i mean)"

    yeah give us the specs

unlikely to be in Fahrenheit as 32c is 90 F

    sounds like an overheater

I had a high pitched continuous noise once on an Asus board - after much diagnostic action, I unplugged the onboard speaker and hey presto - cured. Unlikely to be your problem if its intermittent though
