    XP boot error

    Hi all,

    I started my PC this morning and was greeted with the following error message on boot:

    The following file is missing or corrupt:
    \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

    and it won't go any further, safe mode doesn't work either. Is there any way (other than a reinstall) to fix this?

    Well have checked my winxp to see if windows does a backup and I have system.sav but it's months old and different size.....but you have nothing to lose in overwriting your corrupt system file.

    if you have the disk cant you boot from the windows xp cd and instead of doing a clean install choose the repair option

    you're screwed, mate. time for a reinstall

    unless you have restore points enabled, of course, in which case just roll back

    Cheers for that. I was filled with delight until I got to the bit where it said to go into my System Restore point. What's the first thing I switch off when I install XP? Yup, System Restore...

    /me digs out XP install disc...

    EDIT: Just out of interest, any ideas how this could have happened? Before today I last used the machine on Saturday for about half an hour, just to play some music in iTunes. Didn't run anything else or install or uninstall anything or change any of the OS config in any way...
