    Urgent win 98

im trying to put a dvd-rw in machine running 98, now i put the drive in, it finds the drive as a dvd-rw in device manager but in my computer only a cd-rom drive, so therefore doesnt want anything to do with re-writeable disks..
i had a look about, i downloaded a sony atapi driver.. this didnt sort it, was wondering if anyone could offer an opinion on this, as i would like to know why.. but have a limited knowledge of 98..

    cheers guys

win98 didnt have native burn support so it will show as cdrom

also you might want to ditch win98 since fat cant handle 4gig files well

you need software on to use a a burner

God best you windows 98, (had to ditch win 98 last year as it would not install on my new hardware)

Back on topic, dvd-rw drives were dreamt up after win 98 was released, do you have any software installed to burn discs?
It is not like XP where the O/S includes software to burn discs.

Did the drive come with any software or drives for win 98 - is it compatable with win 98?

Edit I type to slow listy...

you won't "just" get what you need - you'll need to pay for some software like Nero

    recognized how?

    1) there were no cd writers in common use when windows 98 was released, it isn't aware of their existence

    2) rewritable discs are fine, as long as they're written in a conventional manner - "packet writing" discs require a special driver which is included with most cd writer software

you can, but not without third party software such as nero

and as someone else already pointed out, win98 uses FAT32, which has a 4gib file size limit

the icon will not change in my computer to dvdrw it will always show as cdrom

you need nero(or any burning app) to burn any files

the nero you have might not support the dvdrw you have also
