I would assume that competitions are run to generate traffic to the site, if they limit it to forum posters only it won't generate traffic.
I agree with you though :P

The issue is if we do a forum only compo people will sign up to enter...
There is a lot of new people signing up - and we are doing a huge change on the front end of the site with the integration of trust and forum profiles - and more useful features in the MyHEXUS account
Also we have inline commenting too
So, we are doing all we can.

I honestly doubt as many companies would be willing to stump up prizes if Hexus started limiting competition entry to forum members. For one thing, competition entry provides a nice big list of email addresses of people who are interested in your products! It also helps drive traffic to the site, and I'm sure there are people who joined Hexus because of competitions and have ended up as regular forumers.
Saying all that, there is of course nothing to preclude individual companies from setting up their own competitions for forum regulars if they want to do so. But I assume that some of the conditions of entry are dictated by the companies that donate prizes...?
HEXUS is not just the forum pages though - I think it was Dareos who made the analogy with a magazine and the letters page.
You can enter a competition in (say) a newspaper, without contributing to the letters page.
And attractinf people to the HEXUS main site is a 'good thing' for site statistics (which is what advertisers are interested in, and maybe sopme of those visitors will see the light and recognise what a great place the forums are.
The HEXUS rewards, like the Scan postage, are exclusiuve to forum members, but even with the 20 post threshold, we still see those that post up to 21, and then go, although with the criteria being useful and ongoing contributions, they do get weeded out eventually.
Agreed. I\'ve read Hexus for years but only lately signed up for the forum, and even then I don\'t comment all that much. Should that mean I can\'t enter competitions?
