I want to win this, just to see if it actually works! Interesting idea, I guess this is the biggest USB-powered monitor available currently?

Re: Win a Philips Simplicity with USB monitor

I dont understand! Isn't USB power 500ma @ 5v ie maximum 2.5 Watts. Aren't even energy efficient monitors usually consuming 15-20W? I'm probably showing a fundamental lack of understanding of anything, but there we go!

No, you're spot on. USB spec says the port doesn't have to provide any more than 2.5W. Obviously there are small USB only screens out there that you can use as secondary monitors and touch input pads, but this is by far the largest I've seen. It's pretty impressive if Phillips have got the whole thing into 2.5W, and makes you wonder why conventional monitors take so much power? Wonder what the image quality will be like...

They say power consumption is 9W, so it's interesting how it works. Anyone up with the knowhow?

Re: Win a Philips Simplicity with USB monitor

According to Wikipedia USB 3.0 and a USB 2.0 charging port can both supply 1.5A while communicating at high speed. That's 7.5W at 5V, which is close, although still not enough. Anyway, I assume that this kind of port is needed. It would be interesting to read a review of this monitor.

Re: Win a Philips Simplicity with USB monitor

Wow, I would love to see how this works! I assume that as most of the power in monitors is used for the LED themselves then this monitor may have a lower maximum brightness in order to achieve the level of power consumption it's on now.

Re: Win a Philips Simplicity with USB monitor

Likewise, but I'm also wondering what the deal is with video over USB, and only USB2; HD video is on the order of GB/s, so what's compromised? I'd guess quality would drop when lots is happening on-screen, and I wonder what latency is like?

In terms of power, they're breaking USB2 spec, but they're far from the only ones to do it, but this may have trouble working on some ports.

There's significant room for improvement in terms of power consumption in lots of desktop gear, you only have to compare desktop to laptop parts; lots of desktop motherboards have a severe lack of focus on efficiency, having multiple voltage regulators supplying the same voltages, converting from higher than necessary voltages and converting to voltages already available from the PSU. They're also bad for using loads of horribly inefficient linear converters.

I promise that if I win I'll put up a review explaining how it works... if I can work it out that is!
