The perfect second display for your laptop!
I want to win this, just to see if it actually works! Interesting idea, I guess this is the biggest USB-powered monitor available currently?
Yeah, 1080p monitor with power over USB 2.0 :surprised: Crazy.
Still another awesome prize, thanks! :hexlub:
I dont understand! Isn't USB power 500ma @ 5v ie maximum 2.5 Watts. Aren't even energy efficient monitors usually consuming 15-20W? I'm probably showing a fundamental lack of understanding of anything, but there we go!
Wow, power and video via single USB 2.0 port?
Well done Philips :)
Another great competition, thank you Hexus.
Good prize, entered! Thanks again Hexus!
entered, thanks again Hexus.
No, you're spot on. USB spec says the port doesn't have to provide any more than 2.5W. Obviously there are small USB only screens out there that you can use as secondary monitors and touch input pads, but this is by far the largest I've seen. It's pretty impressive if Phillips have got the whole thing into 2.5W, and makes you wonder why conventional monitors take so much power? Wonder what the image quality will be like...
Thank you, entered.
According to Wikipedia USB 3.0 and a USB 2.0 charging port can both supply 1.5A while communicating at high speed. That's 7.5W at 5V, which is close, although still not enough. Anyway, I assume that this kind of port is needed. It would be interesting to read a review of this monitor.
Wow, I would love to see how this works! I assume that as most of the power in monitors is used for the LED themselves then this monitor may have a lower maximum brightness in order to achieve the level of power consumption it's on now.
Likewise, but I'm also wondering what the deal is with video over USB, and only USB2; HD video is on the order of GB/s, so what's compromised? I'd guess quality would drop when lots is happening on-screen, and I wonder what latency is like?
In terms of power, they're breaking USB2 spec, but they're far from the only ones to do it, but this may have trouble working on some ports.
There's significant room for improvement in terms of power consumption in lots of desktop gear, you only have to compare desktop to laptop parts; lots of desktop motherboards have a severe lack of focus on efficiency, having multiple voltage regulators supplying the same voltages, converting from higher than necessary voltages and converting to voltages already available from the PSU. They're also bad for using loads of horribly inefficient linear converters.
And another fine competition. Thanks again.
:O_o1: It's wizardry I tell thee, wizardry!
I promise that if I win I'll put up a review explaining how it works... if I can work it out that is!
Thanks Hexus :)
Yeah PHILIPS USB Monitor...I Hope i winthis...Love PHILIPS and Thanks for the giveway Hexus.net
I did some digging - it comes with a Y-cable which has two connectors for the PC end and one for the monitor end (hence it's allowed to draw twice as much power). Phillips list it's max consumption as 9 Watts so it wouldn't be possible with one port alone.
Sorry, no wizardry - it's just like the portable bus powered USB hard drives :)
Potentially they could provide a y-cable that plugs into 2 USB ports and "hope" that the laptop can provide the necessary 1.8A across 2 ports - I suppose that's less than 1A per port, so I suppose it might be more reasonable...
AND beaten to it by dangel *sigh* ;)
Sorry ;)
High current draw is for charging only I think (if I remember rightly) i.e. non active devices which this doesn't fall into. Could be wrong it's a while since I looked at the spec.
I found the info on the Phillips support site for the device - where it tells you that you need both connectors plugged into to power it.
Entered. I hope to win.
Wow USB? damn you technology!
I wonder how it works, and why aren't other manufactures doing the same. I hope i win! But, good luck to all!
i found video on you tube.

OMG! Cool prize! I want one! Thx for the chance!
All I have is a USB cord this would match up well with it.
Entered. Thanks.
Wow!
I don'r believe it!
:O
Didn't even realise such a product was available (although I think that's what thunderbolt is about? ) but a very interesting product!
Cheers hexus.
Will this run in eyefinity????
Great prize Hexus Entered and trhanks
I really need a new monitor...
This will free up a power point...
Sweet prize to win!
lets see if my luck will work =)
Awesome monitor! I wish I wish!!! Thx!
I agree with above I can't see how this could possibly be powered over USB, even using two ports it would struggle surely? Be interesting to see a review of it, can't imagine its all that amazing screen quality though.
The video doesn't show any Y-splitter and clearly implies a single port. I call WITCHCRAFT! Entered though - hoping to take it into the office to prove a point as they are refusing to give me second monitor due to my workstations integrated graphics not supporting it.
You only have to look at laptop monitors which are well down into single-figure power draw, they're just designed with more attention paid to efficiency. I'd still like to know how it works on the data side of things though, USB isn't exactly high bitrate compared to display interfaces.
Entered. Great prize.
I have an intense desire to use this monitor....I hope I win it!
That's awesome.... USB monitor? Never really heard of this!! Thanks Hexus!
my laptop monitor usually got a blank black screen when my laptop getting hot :(
I hope I can win this one #wishing
I've found a review of this, or at least something similar: http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/reviews/s...-221su-review/
As I suspected, it can't really cope with video so it's limited to non-graphical apps really. If the review is right about 10W power consumption, they're at about four times the spec if it uses a single port, or double if it uses a Y cable, and I expect it wouldn't have a way to negotiate power draw at all on the second port. This can and will cause problems on some systems, especially some laptops, from failing to power it up to triggering a system reset as the motherboard may think the port has been shorted (I've seen this happen with some 2.5" USB HDDs, and they're less than 10W even at spinup).
Just entered thanks !!
