Mobile Phones Broken/Spares & Repair Etc

    Hi,

Due to the changing state of the world I am moving into the world of microsoldering, basic soldering skills are ok but taking up microsoldering, got a course for next year but looking for phones to practice on, doesn't matter if its samsung, apple, icloud locked etc, they won't ever be sold or used for anything other than being taken apart and soldering practice.

Happy to pay postage of course.

    Thank you
    Jon

I've got at least one dead handset (managed to break the digitizer connection while I was doing a screen replacement, and may have a few old/unused ones lying around. PM me your address and I'll sort out sending some stuff over

Hey I have an S7 and old xperia c3 you can have, both with broken screens. PM me if you like. I enjoy Louis Rossman's channel, he makes soldering look easy. Sounds like an interesting course that'll come in handy for fixing your own items too.

Thanks for the replies, will PM both of you.

It really isn't as easy as it looks I have done it before very briefly and its ridiculously fiddly even with a microscope etc but like most things its all about the practice, a few months until course start should at least make me competent in soldering and use of equipment.

I might have the PCB from a broken Galaxy S6 if you're still interested (failed/cooked PMIC I believe). Don't have the rest of the phone to go with it but sounds like that's the bit you're interested in anyway?

This thread reminds me of a program I heard on the radio last night - Freddie Figgers - from very humble roots he taught himself electronics by taking apart broken computers and went on to found a telecoms worth millions: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/w3cszdky

I can only wish But the plan is when we can travel again to do a training course I had booked months ago with a view to starting a business. Long term goals and all that.

But if I make it I am sure to post a picture of my new Lamborghini in the car showroom thread

Re: Mobile Phones Broken/Spares & Repair Etc

I'll see if I can find it later/tomorrow. It was left over from a repair for a friend; the phone wouldn't switch on and upon inspection, the PMIC was clearly getting extremely hot. He wasn't in a rush for it and it was bricked anyway so I tried (unsuccessfully) to reflow a cheap replacement PMIC without a proper rework gun (and several subsequent attempts including knocking off some passives out of frustration) before just giving up and getting a replacement PCB cheaply on ebay. I'm not certain if it just didn't align properly after the first attempt or something else was damaged too but IIRC the LED flashes changed after the initial rework.

I'm OK with hand soldering down to 0603 comfortably, and 0402 with enough concentration, but the super-crowded PCB on a phone makes it more challenging if not practically impossible to iron-solder even passives. I don't have much experience with hot air rework and don't have any of the proper gear besides a butane hot air nozzle (I know). But yeah - people who do it all day everyday make it look easy!

Out of interest, are you into re-balling BGAs? It's something I would like to learn but can't really justify the gear.
