A new Ubuntu coming in just over a Month

April will see Canonical release Feisty Fawn, aka Ubuntu 7.04 hit the Internet. Right now, there's a freeze on the repository and the fifth testing release of the new Ubuntu distribution looms. ZDNet has more:

Edgy Eft has served me well running MythTV. Now all I need is for mythtv-0.21 to be released and I can marry the two this summer... here's hoping.

feisty currently has a development snapshot of mythtv, probably due to mythtv 0.21 not being out in time, but 0.20 being too "old"

I think they need to counter aero, even if it does not ship with beryl it could be a little easier to install it!

I know; built from the mythtv svn. I have no idea with 0.21 will be out, but a number of fixes are already in place that might be useful to me.

In fact, when I upgrade to feisty, I may well just build from svn rather than use a package... the mythtv packages kind of lock you in to their release cycle.

unless some kind soul makes packages for an older release

I'm waiting for more ports to AMD64, yeah you can do force installs for some stuff, but it's still not as nice as "sudo apt-get install" - job done :) :D

Yep, but why only use half of it's potential? ;)

You mean no performance increase for twice the hassle? No ta.

it is, as long as you have access to a wired or unencrypted connection once - install the "network-manager-gnome" package and reboot. click the little network icon in the system tray, pick a wpa-encrypted wireless network, enter security details, done.

i think feisty will have this by default.

What app's do you want to use that will make a difference going 64bit though?

Well I'm no Linux-nerd, but the first time I installed Ubuntu on an old laptop I spent hours trying to get WPA to work to no avail :( Gave up in the end and just run it wired when I need the internet (it's an old laptop I use as a backup PC).

But I am amazed by how Ubuntu was so easy to setup and use (Internet, Email and Office apps for the average user). Really does dispel the myth of Linux being only for hardcore photophobes :p

Last time I considered installing Ubuntu on my laptop, a couple of months ago now, I read the instructions, read them again, thought "bugger this" and kept using XP. Having to jump through loops just to get your monitors native resolution displayed isn't my idea of fun, let alone NDIS-Wrapper for Wi-Fi drivers.

I also think GNOME is rubbish, but I'll save that for another time ;)

ndiswrapper is only required for wireless drivers which don't have native linux versions - which isn't many these days. certainly Intel wireless works out of the box, as do a lot of broadcom chips on newer kernels (it looks like atheros, atmel, broadcom, orinoco, hermes, intel, and a few others are supported from here)

and the display resolution is automatically determined during installation
