    HDMI and scaling feature in nine-strong Toshiba DVD range

    Although headlines are being grabbed by high-definition disc players, Toshiba will be augmenting its HD DVD line-up with nine standard-def DVD models - some, with HDMI and upscaling.

    Even the £30 base model has component output (though no HDMI or upscaling) and handles DivX, MP3, JPEG stills, SVCD and VCD and all but one of the expected SD DVD formats.

    Upscaling in a player, especially a cheap player, is pointless.....

    Firstly, you cannot add detail that was never there....

    Secondly, which one of the following would you expect to find the best scaler technology in?

    1 - a £30 - £100 dvd player

    or

    2 - a £500 - £2k LCD/plasma

    ?

    I use my upscaling dvd player not to upscale, but to pump its nice clean signal thru hdmi and then let my TV do the rest. I don't think my dvd player would ever beat my tv. By the way, the image quality is great!

    I thought someone from Toshiba said in one of the CeBit videos that they were ditching production of DVD players because they weren't making any money in that market?

    It's not because my memory is good, i only watched it the other day. I was on Dialup for three weeks while CeBit was going on, so had to catch up at the weekend

    I guess his division is no longer involved in DVD players so he possibly was answering truthfully, as far as he was aware.
