Big claims for Computer Supermarket 4GB music/video player

Computer Supermarket is making some big claims for a slim, 4GB music and video player. Its £49 MP4 Player is said to have a similar look and feel to a £129 iPod Nano - but with extras - and will, it reckons, shake up the entire personal entertainment market.

As well as being slimmer than a Nano, the player has the added bonus of an FM radio with 50-presets and recording functionality.

    More.

These have been out for quite a while now. The landlord at my local has been selling them since before christmas. They aren't under that name (they have loads of far eastern characters on the boxes) but have the same menu/screen and the buttons and jacks are all the same.

Problem is they are slow and clunky, finding music is a pain and they just don't feel intuitive. As much as I don't like ipod's that much they are far better than this.

Oh yeah and they have sudoku on them.

If I register "applepod.co.uk" and sell these do you think I'll be ok?

thats right, seen many of them go for as low as 30 pounds for 4gb versions, they come with absolutely everything with no restrictions. ie. video, radio , etc

only diff is i think the wheel is not touch, its actual buttons which kind of makes a nasty click switch sound. other then that its a good one

    * Stores up to 1000 tracks
So is that 1000 WMA tracks at 64kbit/s or 1000 FLAC tracks at 980+kbit/s?

    * Available in Black, Blue, Red and Silver
So the press release shows Pink.

I can't really see what sets this player apart from the barrage of other cheap OEM 'china-brand' players that can be picked up on ebay for >£50, apart from it looks a bit like an ipod (which in my mind is a bad thing).

well what do you think? Considering it is a 4GB player and it has no FLAC support

I think it was a cheeky response at the lack of details given in the press release.

Fair point, but every other press release about an MP3 player has exactly the same statements. All of which are complete rubish if you actually encode music at a decent bitrate.

I could be wrong - but I'm wondering whether these are the same ones because of the AVI playback compatability. The far eastern ones I've found (which do look very much like this tbh!) do not have AVI playback but can only playback there own limited format...?

If they *are* the same, then it would mean re-encoding Videos to this new (pretty crap from what i saw) format before you could play it.

If that's the case ... no thanks

I'm crossing my fingers and hoping it's different and plays standard divx/xvids ...

They do usually have * or similar and the small print then explains how they came to that conclusion.

Yeah, eBay has been flooded with these clones for months. Many for £20.
