Just thinking, but don't most people who can afford a PS3 have sky anyway? I know I'd have Sky before a PS3....

Ahh... I have a PS3 and I don't have Sky and for one simple reason... there's not much on Sky that I want to watch.

hmm interesting. Have to agree that the PS3 is looking pretty versatile even at these early stages

Its is going to be interesting to compare this with the IPTV route that is being taken with the xbox 360. Then again, using the xbox as a media extendeer for my htpc probably does the same thing as having a decoder and I can have much bigger hdd's in my pc.

I do start to wonder what happened to playing games on a console though!

so will the PS3 let you use USB storage for this or do we have just 60GB ( minus anything we have saved on there already) to play with.

getting a standalone PVR would be a better bet would it not (not a sky+ one, just a freeview)

You can replace the internal hdd with another 2.5" drive. Sony actually let you do this, unlike microsoft hwho lock down those HDD's so hard you can't do anything with them!

Yep - will probably get round to getting a larger disk some time -at the moment im just sharing/streaming media with the PC. Good to know you can do this at least.

    I'm doing something similar.

The Xbox 360 is my extender, wired through to my media PC... which shortly is going to feed and pull from a networked RAID array with around 2Tb of storage.

    BUT!

If I slap Media Player 11 on the network device I can then stream to the PS3 as well... Gawd, I LOVE technology!

Yup, you can quite happily chuck in one of those nice new 250GB 2.5" SATA drives, the ps3 will spot it and format it for you - job done

Does this look like it's going to be a 'toy' feature or an attempt at offering serious pvr functionality? I'd be interested to see how they can achieve the latter. Even if it is dual tuner, how will it cope with recording a high bandwidth transmission while you're gaming? I'd love to see it, but I find it hard to imagine it could rival a customised Toppy.

Yeah but not every country has a service like Sky.

I think its a great idea and it seems like they will start to get full use out of the flexibility they put in the console/computer they built.

    THAT is the question

the ps3 isn't flush with spare cycles, and whilst recording a DVB-T transmission doesn't take much grunt, it'll certainly have an impact (e.g. on load times)

But even then, Sky are moving into the DTVB area...

    http://lifestyle.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=9293

But that won't help you with your PS3 as it needs Sky's own decoder box... Of course, if Sony did a deal with Sky, THAT'D seriously reinforce both brands for DTVB.
