AMD's last hurrah for its 90nm X2 processors - Athlon 64 X2 6400+ 'Black Edition'

Black is synonymous with death in many cultures, so is the final rattle from an architecture that has served AMD well but is now showing its age against price-cut Intel Core 2 Duo/Quads? We think so.

Now if they made this for socket 939...

ditto.
I still find it amusing how AMD can not see the situation they are in or even capitalise on it if they can....
When buying new, its Core 2 all the way for most. It has the best performance, the best overclocking and quad core already.
So, why push all their resources into AM2? Why not take advantage of a gigantic socket 939 userbase and push for that while still developing the next generation?

Pressure from the industry to go to DDR2 is the given excuse

I think I'd much rather buy an Intel core2duo QuadCore chip (2.4ghz with 8mb cache) :D
Re: AMD's last hurrah for its 90nm X2 processors appears to be the Athlon 64 X2 6400+
I never understood why amd ditched 939 :O_o1:, arguably it has to be one of the stupidest business decisions of all time.
If the current line of AM2 cpus had been available for Socket 939, then I am sure that plenty of 939 users would not have gone to Intel.
Also (correct me if I am wrong) but haven’t Amd stopped manufacturing 939 processors? The AMD 4800X2 939 goes for £200+ :surprised: on ebay, which is ridiculous.

I also wouldn't mind one of these for 939. Then I could sell my 4800 on ebay for that £200+ ;)
But tbh, intel own the market atm.

yes, and yes it was an utterly braindead move by AMD to kill off 939, almost feels like sabotage doesnt it?
Re: AMD's last hurrah for its 90nm X2 processors appears to be the Athlon 64 X2 6400+
At a guess I'd say AMD simply don't have the capacity to run AM2 and S939 production at the same time.
The majority of processors ship through OEM and channel, not retail, where being able to upgrade from a previous part is far less important.
The integrated memory controller means the AM2 and S939 dice are not interchangable.
When Intel moved from Socket 478 to LGA775 the Prescott (or Gallatin) core could be dropped into either package - power delivery on S478 allowing - so they could just produce dice and package them as required.
For AMD they could either produce DDR or DDR2 IMC equiped dice. A Rev F die could not be fitted to a Socket 939 package.
Since the volume demand (Dell, HP, etc) would be more than happy to switch to DDR2 (simplifies the supply chain having the same memory for both Intel and AMD systems) AMDs relative lack of fab capacity most likely made it unfessible to be producing both Rev E and Rev F wafers, while also satisfying the demands of (and contracts with) OEMs.
Hence the relatively abrupt end to Socket 939 production.

Thats nearly 6seconds slower than my 6600 at stock speed

Especially when they said that it would be around aslong as socket A.

Especially that the ddr2 had no real benefit over ddr1 especially with the loser latencies of ddr2. I will stick to my opty 170 until such as AMD bring something that really says to me 'buy me im special' :pcpunch:

Buy E6550 or something for £130.
Buy C2D motherboard for £70.
Buy DDR2 RAM.
Sell 4800 for £200.
Sell DDR1 RAM.
:)
