HEXUS Probes Electron Avenue Pt:1

London's Tottenham Court Road has been the heart of the UK's electronics business for decades - with buses full of ca$h-carrying customers go up and down 7 days a week - searching for bargains. We paid our congestion charge and joined in...

Re: HEXUS Probes Electron Avenue Pt:1

Left off the bit about "The first time I got slaped by a computer"

I was around 15 years old, when a friend and I were down Tottenham Court Road looking at all of the cool stuff in (among other places), Laskeys.

"Hey, look at this", he said - pointing to one of the new fangled computers

On screen it was asking, "What is your name ?" (can anyone else feel an 'input A$ coming ?)

It followed that up with "What is your mum's name ?" (you can see it now - right ?)

Amazed to be interacting with something that appeared intelligent - I got slapped between the eyes when I hit <RETURN> and it executed its GOTO loop - complete with 'heritage question'

Needless to say that my mate had WAY more money than me - and his parents had just bought him one...

...and I ended up getting arsemastered by his superior tech knowledge !

    "Never again!" I vowed

In the (near 3 decades worth of) years that followed, Tottenham Court Road has changed beyond recognition...

    ...while remaining EXACTLY the same

If you want bargains, in London, 7 days a week - then this is still a great place to head

    PLEASE READ

We really want to get hands on with what you guys (the HEXUS Massive) believe to be the greatest stores in the UK

Can't promise that we will be able to visit all of them - but if you have an absolutely ROCKING LOCAL STORE - then please let us know - HERE on the forums

It can be web based - but we always like to be able to get HANDS-ON with product where possible

Friendly, intelligent, knowledgable staff - with the patience of saints - is a defintite 'MUST HAVE'

Pricing DOES NOT need to beat the WEB - just be competitive - we are sensible people who understand that superior service/better positioning/longer hours/weekend opening etc all need to be paid for

Life is not always about the lowest pricing - support and a caring approach is also vital - and that is why operations like SCAN continue to succeed in the face of stiff competition

If you know of a company, store, etailer that is exceptional - and should be given a bigger profile to the HEXUS Massive - PLEASE let us know !...

Re: HEXUS Probes Electron Avenue Pt:1

When i worked in a computer shop, it used to really annoy us when people came in and asked for a discound for cash. I used to give a discount for Switch/Solo transactions. 35p per transaction as opposed to 59p per £100 to bank the cash.

If shops are giving discount fr cash, you really have to wonder if all that cash is being put through the till.

    Just my 2p

A no-holds-barred, behind the scenes video of Overclockers would be fun, just to see if all the rumours from ex-employee's are true.

Bear in mind that PC World (not the whole DSG monolith - just PC World) turned around £1.9 BILLION last year
Only choice is whether we do it as a 'black op under the radar' - or a 100% open walk through with the help of the dear folk from Hemel

Some stores will offer a 'form of total web price match'...

...but the key diffence you need to bear in mind for people in the south east is that West End stores are open 7 days a week

i.e. if your PSU blows up 8pm on a Friday - then you can hit central London 9am the following morning and load up with a Corsair 620w - and have it back in your machine by 10am

Overall, most web pricing will beat most store pricing - that is a fact

If you live near Scan or the West End - then you're just lucky because you can 'pop down' and grab what you need at 'web-like' prices

What questions would you like answered ?

In the old days, when 3D games would only work with a small group of cards, I used to like torturing them by asking if '3DFX ONLY' games would run on XYZ cards or ask them if my system would be quicker with a single PIO Mode 6 drive or RAID 7

Probably a little harder now cos the manufacturers themselves have worked so hard on compatibility...

...so any/all suggestions for questions welcome!

Its VERY small, but its packed full of products, I got my PSU from there was about £10 - £15 more expensive than online, but I was desperate and as has been mentioned already, service, rent, bills etc. have to be paid for and this is situated in a VERY expensive part of London.

It IS only a shop after all, so don't worry yourself too much about not being able to pay them a visit.

lol, humm well i guess you could pull the same kind of stuff, ask if this beats ... etc etc.

But tbh i went in my local pc world last week and they have seriously perked up, now sell good zalman and coolermaster products, ocz products, there "gaming" pc's have Gigabyte Aurora cases and Microsoft habu mouses (i got to try this mouse and it feels so nice in the hand )
Plus i like how they had a ps3 and xbox 360 set up with a good game in both of them to try, even game havent got that anymore.

    That's my thinking too

They seem to have given up on 'actually being expert' and now just have more people around to 'help you find the right coloured box' for the selection you have already made

Will bunch all of these ideas and whip out the cameras as the nights draw in
