    The number of ways in which the iPhone can be carrier unlocked is ever-growing, and so too are the legal threats. But the question remains: Just how can you sell somebody a product and then expect them to do exactly what you say with it?

    Just how can you sell somebody a product and then expect them to do exactly what you say with it?
    Easy. Don't sell someone a physical product, sell them a license to use a device that remains under the company's ownership. You can then control the license conditions.

    to me it would just make more sense to allow the phone to work on any network.

    It is a short termist view to lock in consumer because device hackers will always find a way around, and apple and at&t are left with there arse in a sling and all they can do is threaten foreign company's for doing something that is not illegal in there home country. it seams the striesand effect may well come into play here
