Pretty expensive - and no doubt it will be cracked and free soon.....
No doubt that iphone unlock is going to spread worldwide just like every other phone. To me, it's not big news and I can't see Apple going about to shut it all down.
The thing is how are apple going to force people to use the latest firmware? I mean with game consoles it's easy enough but I just can't see a feasible way to do it on a phone that won't course an uproar. Add to it the p2p aspect, as whitenoise pointed out, and mobile providers look pretty screwed.
Simple - if you want to Sync you have to use iTunes... they can simply lock it out I suspect....
Yep indeed
Obviously Apple would prefer it if no-one unlocked their iPhone, as they get a kickback from the subscription (though this part is really dependent on iPhone activation hacks rather than unlocking) - I remember having an argument in June with one of the clueless editors on ArsTechnica who swore blind that Apple wasn't getting kickbacks despite industry reports to the contrary.
But the fact is that all Apple needs is to make it sufficiently inconvenient. Put in some trivial code to break unlocks with each update. Sure, the hackers will fix their addresses in an hour, but so what? Users will get annoyed at the need to get a workaround for each update and many will just give up. It's the same model that many shareware authors use: just push out a new version that trivially breaks the existing cracks, and keep doing it. Apple has the resources to stay ahead of the hackers in this race.
Isn't it a legal requirement in the US to allow you to unlock your phone after a certain period of time?
I wonder how that effects this situation.
Isn't that also the case in some EU countries too?
I had a quick google on ths before but couldn't come up with anything meaningful. I've red this on blog comments and other forums, but no-one has given references or anthing conclusive.
