Smart move - maximising areas that Intel will take time to respond to.

    Re: AMD announces tri-core Phenom

Imagine the design process for this.

    start > all programs > AMD's in-house VLSI program

    File > open > dual-core-phenom.vhdl

    *Select one of the cores*

    Edit > copy

    *Click in some space*

    Edit > paste

    File > spin

    Win!

(I don't think it's quite that simple, though).

Yes, that's right, a prime number of cores will be coming to a desktop near you, next year.
Since 2 is a prime number as well, that's not really novel .

Clever move if all they're doing is binning quad cores with a defective core as tri cores and then targetting them against core 2 duo.

    Now that's interesting.

However, wouldn't the company release them alongside 4-core SKUs if that was the case? Guess we'll have to examine the die sizes when they arrive.

    Re: AMD announces tri-core Phenom

I will be very surprised if this isn't due to yields - maybe it could be that they can't win vs C2D with 2 Cores...?

According to daily tech these are quad core cpus with one core disabled...

"Essentially, the Phenom triple-core processors are quad-core variants with one core disabled. This allows AMD to simply disable one core on quad-core dies for maximum use of a single wafer."

    Re: AMD announces tri-core Phenom

    Fair enough.

If I was AMD I'd hit the market with them at the same time as the quad-cores. We waited long enough for Barcelona, they should make a positive statement by getting tri-core out of the door quickly.
