If your PC is quieter couldn't you just hook it up to that and play through VLC or something similar?

Providing you have PowerDVD & trhe oomph to playback the VC-1 or AVC encoded disks, yes. Oh, and HDCP oy AnyDVD HD to remove the requirement.
