ASUS jumps the gun by unveiling Phenom-ready motherboards

Although the rumour-mill says that AMD's next-generation quad-core Phenom CPUs aren't due for release for a couple of weeks, ASUS has jumped the gun by showing on the web some of its upcoming range of Phenom-ready motherboards - units that will also run current AM2 processors.

The amount of copper on these boards is getting silly.

Not too sure on the memory cooling - from what it looks like, you'd need to take off existing heat spreaders, which will void the warranty on almost all manufactures.

Wait, there's a motherboard under there, it looked like a funny copper sculpture to me.

Re: ASUS jumps the gun by unveiling Phenom-ready motherboards

If you look in the right places on the Asus site they have the details for the 790FX boards up already. There's a slightly better shot of the memory cooler, and yes, as Agent said it looks like any memory heat spreaders would have to go - personally I wouldn't ditch the lifetime warranty on the only components that have such a thing...

Currently I prefer Dfi's implementation of the chipset since it's cooling system isn't totally ridiculous (although still pushing it...is the heatpipe really necessary?..)

I can't see what the fuss is really.

In fact I think it's a good idea as the AM2 and AM2+ platforms are designed to be interoperable with each other. What this means is people who have gone out and got these boards can use their old AM2 processors before the newer phenom range all appear - whenever that is

Man some of those asus engineers need to lay off the heatpipe handouts, it's getting seriously crowded on there!

But is the Phenom really going to complete with Yorktown ? Has anyone seen any earlier reviews of Phenom ?
