Microsoft try again, Zune 2 launches in the USA

Despite having sold only 1.2 million Zunes since its launch in late 2006, Microsoft holds true to its promise of being in the portable music player business for the long run and launches its revised range in the form of Zune 2.

Re: Microsoft try again, Zune 2 launches in the USA

My brother is off to New York on the weekend and I was seriously considering asking him to pick up an 80GB Zune for me. With the dollar value dropping, it'd only work out at about £120 which isn't bad at all.

However, with the Zune said to be a US only device, it looks like it'll be a little awkward using the marketplace and social features so I've decided against it.

    Why US only?

I don't get it, I want one of these as many people are saying it's an ipod killer.

Blimey - Are Microsoft making that much money they don't want any more?

The new Zune software is fantastic, in fact I prefer it to iTunes and I've been using iTunes for years.

The Zunes look pretty snazzy too, I might have to get one if they ever come to england...

That was exactly what I thought, downloaded it last night and was playing about with it. I really like it! I think Microsoft are shooting themselves in the foot by not releasing it here in Europe.

Here's an example of some random persons Zune Social profile: Zune.net | Profile - redpill Rabbit

Pretty cool I think. 'Tis a shame it's US only.

Microsoft have indeed created something rather good here, and in time it will eventually come to Europe. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

I'm sure a lot of people will start whining that its just a rip off of iTunes. I do agree that it takes a similar approach to iTunes.... but what's wrong with that? Microsoft obviously looked at what made itunes good and buillt on that. It does quite a few things that I wish iTunes had for ages like FOLDER MONITORING

I love the way everything fades etc.

One thing that I'm not too sure about is its integration with Vista. It just doesn't fit in with Aero, infact it makes Aero look a little chunky.

    *shakes head*

Silly MS not launching this in the UK or European market.

Re: Microsoft try again, Zune 2 launches in the USA

It actually really really upsets me that they aren't releasing it in the UK straight away. There are some very nice features, and some of the artwork available to the Americans will look stunning imho: (Cool Hunting: Zune Originals: Interview with Chris Stephenson)

Plus I am also an "anything but apple" person.

Without an online music store, it will not be released here.

A store depends on deals with EU record labels and is therefore unlikely.

Re: Microsoft try again, Zune 2 launches in the USA

I've had a change of heart. I've come to the conclusion that if someday the Zune does make it to UK shores, it'll probably be around the £200 mark. Therefore, I'm going to ask my brother to pick up the 80GB model in New York next week. I'm sure I can find a workaround for accessing the marketplace over here.

I'm using it with XP, looks lovely, now if only I could hack it so that I could sync it with my ipod...

Re: Microsoft try again, Zune 2 launches in the USA

My brother came back from New York today, couldn't find the 8GB or 80GB versions in stock anywhere. Found one shop that had the 4GB but figured I wouldn't want that one.

Virgin Megastore claimed they'd have some more stock yesterday, my brother got there around 10ish and they'd all gone already. Combination of good sales and poor stock levels I think.

Ah well, I won't be holding my breath for a UK release.
