In our Industry this is an important decision that needs to be made, as pre ordering stocks of media and writers is going to be an expensive lottery. Here at Bigpockets.co.uk we are already planning our strategy for 2008 based on these new formats.
The planned roll out for Hi definition blank media will be increased ten fold according to reports from our Asian suppliers in 2008. This is largely going to be attributed to coincide with the reduced cost of burners, so opening the market to new users.
My personal view is that we will be running both formats for a while.
Just hope we do not get left with the Betamax tape.

just stick with hd and help it win the format war
you mean blue ray right?
Hd-DVD is the one I want to win as the discs are cheaper to produce and more robust. Which is better for the consumer.
yes but, blue ray has far more storage, and as a technology has great potential for expansion.
you lot are just cheap b******s

alright, alright. i apologize for not being able to detect the sarcasm in his post
sorry ultra
i said this in my pm, but i guess its only the right thing to put it here too.
no problem, i guess i really should have put a or something to make it obvious.
lol yes! it would have made quite the difference
Blu-Ray's extra capacity has so far failed to yield notable advantages in terms of image quality or extra functionality (and, indeed, BR until recently lagged significantly behind in terms of functionality). It could have been better, and, since the winner of the next-gen disc war will become the next mass standard for PC archival backup, the extra capacity would have been nice, but they screwed up and blew it.
HD-DVD's lower fabrication costs are really starting to hit home. It's VHS vs Beta all over again: VHS was cheaper, and it won. When Blu-Ray players cost twice as much as a decent HD-DVD player they really need to provide a solid rationale for the extra consumer investment, and they have failed in that.
Oh, and they deserve to fail for their hubris over BD+. Uncrackable my nether regions. The very fact that they attempted such an assault on the property rights of consumers damns them in my eyes. Viva Antigua.
Yes you are right about more storage, but to be honest it won't get used.
The biggest problem with BR is that it is proprietary and Sony demand a percentage of every disc or player sold.
HD DVD however is almost royalty free and there will be little wasted space.
Look at electronic history, SONY do this every time, and every time the public just walk away from it.
For instance:
Betamax
Mini Disk
Memory Stick
PS3
Don't get me wrong SONY produce some very good equipment, but who really wants to pay a fortune just to add peripherals to them.
Life is like Computing, just when you get it all working properly, Bits need replacing
