More disappointment here from a 939 user - looks like intel wins again :(
Nice idea, but given the A64s all have an onboard memory controller, I reckon that the costs of re-engineering a DDR2-supporting processor to effectively downgrade it to DDR1 (since S939's pretty much a DDR1 platform) would probably wipe out any benefit. And I say that with some regret, being a S939 user myself.Quote:

Limited-run production with S939 as the main selling point would be beneficial for AMD, even if the processor is priced at £20-£25 more than the AM2 equivalent.
AMD needs to start trying new things and this could be one of them.

Socket 939 here as well. Debating whether to go core2duo with this e2160 or not. Looks a good value way of upgrading.
that was a good article, also thinking of integrated graphics. what platform offers the best performance.
i know you dont get integrated graphics for performance but still, if it's there i would still want it to be reasonable for integrated!
what would you recommend for the amd and intel platforms?
it's crazy to think a new decent motherboard, overclockable friendly cpu and 2gb ram cost about the same as a graphics card that might be able to play crysis!
Great batch number on the BE-2350 (0004)!
However, it is a great shame you didn't go with the BE-2400, as that is a different processor stepping (G2, instead of G1), which is supposed to overclock much better, and have lower cache latency.
I think that beats the £50 price threshold though... Its not like the 2350 lost by a little anyway, it was consistently slower by significant amounts...Quote:

You see, to tell the long story first, I was about to acquire a set of solid dance mats. Dance mats without stepmania would be a waste of money, so I'd then need a computer for the lounge to run stepmania on. So, the short story is that I have been looking into building a budget media centre system for around £350, including the vista home premium licence. It is just about possible, but the challenge is to give it enough power to deal with timeslipping shows and additional duties whilst still being as quiet as the budget will allow.
If I had the money, I\'d get one of the awesome cases my friend has, completely fanless and working using a mobile CPU to keep the heat down. But I don\'t :(
This would probably make for a great separate article, to be honest:
- Which is better for the price - a faster CPU, or an aftermarket HSF?
- How much cooling is required - could a good HSF and a single case fan work?
- Can you keep the noise down and still overclock? What\'s the highest overclock on the processors with minimal cooling before temperatures become a worry?
What do people think? :D
get a cheap Core2Duo with 2GB Ram and a cheap P35/650 mobo and your rocking and a rolling!
More likely they'd do some black edition runs and charge a huge premium - as long as the cost was less than the upgrade cost to a new m/bo, ram and OEM OS they have a captive market.Quote:

I know 4 people who'd jump at the cance of one of those..... lots of very good S939 punters would be all over that chip like a rash :)
Because if you don't do that, they'll all go and buy an Intel system. They wont upgrade to an AM2.
