Unless you really want/need it right now it may be best to wait a few more months. Then buy the os cd/dvd when it has both the os and sp1 merged (so you don't have to dload/install the update on to an already installed os. This makes for a much cleaner installation, and can save some headaches, many people had problems when installing sp1 (and, later sp2) onto xp.

Also, there may be some pitfalls with the update that should be sorted after sp1 has been released for a couple of months.

On the other hand, you may enjoy tinkering, and providing you have all your important stuff backed up, so, if you really want to, give it a go. If you do, maybe you could keep a diary of any problems you may encounter (and, hopefully, fixes) that you could post on this site, or a blog and keep us up to date on how it's going, the good and the bad.

If you are woried about SP1 auto downloading and screwing something, there is a blocker available from MS for network admins.

Oh my god, its almost like they are trying to go backwards
Seems the feature was recently pulled, it used to be there

Heck, you wouldn't even have needed vLite, you could just put it in the updates folder on the DVD and it would do it at install time.

    Thanks for that

TBH that lack of feature has really p me off.
I hate doing post install Service pack installation.
I understand that with the image based install, its more difficult to integrate the new service pack in there, but MS should provide a tool for this.

Ironic part is, it will probably encourage piracy.
Someone will do it and just put it online, or an official MS one with the SP in it. Bound to happen.

Re: Windows Vista SP1 release candidate ready to roll

Just read, in PCAdvisor mag that the sp3 release for XP, according to a testing company, has ~10% speed increase over xp sp2., there are aiming to release it in the first half of 2008. The same firm reported that the sp1 pack for vista has only a 1-2% increase over plain vista.

Of course I read this in a magazine, so it might not be true.

Re: Windows Vista SP1 release candidate ready to roll

The 10% increase in XP is only under certain situations, not a general speedup like the online press are banging on about.
