Re: Review :: Cloverfield
Sounds like my type of film, I'll be watching this shortly!
Re: Review :: Cloverfield
I was a bit disappointed with it.. a reasonably new cinematic approach to a very tried and tested formula but it was never terrifying (as Parm said) and honestly, I didn't really care what happened to the characters either at the end.
My first reaction to seeing the big creature was to laugh. The film felt much longer than it really was as well (rarely a good sign.) I'd give it 6 out of 10, maybe 7 if I were to be pushed but no more. I certainly wouldn't pay to see it again.

Re: Review :: Cloverfield
I'll be honest and say I honestly hadn't heard of this until now. I thought it was going to be a new intel processor or something. *skips thread to avoid spoilers*
Re: Review :: Cloverfield
i have mixed feelings, love the fact its handcam, except seeing feet all time, love how it all unpans but talking at bigging is too long, and it kinda out of no where drops into hand cam makes no sense.
I dislike the most that its only 1 hour and 10/20 mins long this annoyed me, as day out to cinema is meant to be exactly that not like a hour lol, i've played games longer.
Got to say though its scary, kinda jumpy and a great film, a must see imo but not perfect.
And one of the characters will make you laugh quite a few times and thats huck.
Re: Review :: Cloverfield
Typo on the second page, first line "Thought not an entirely new concept,"
Re: Review :: Cloverfield
mixed views on this, technically, i like it. otherwise it's more based on how the characters deal with the monster attack. said monster doesn't get much fame.
Re: Review :: Cloverfield
Then I guess I'm the first one that didn't like it at all.
the handcam approach is new and refreshing, but realistic asit may be, it almost gave me an headache.
Seriously, I would like to warn anyone having light-induced eppileptic attacks, DON'T go to this movie.
One of the biggest dislikes in this film was the "realism" of the injuries.
The girl who got bitten in the tunnels (the one Huck likes so much) runs along happily moments later.
Or even better, when the rescue the girl from the tipping skyscraper, she is pinned to the floor by a one inch piece of concrete-steel through her chest.
the lift her up, freeing her of the steel in her chest and 10 minutes later, she is running through the park as if nothing is wrong...
All in all a valiant, but in my opinion very much failed attempt.
Belgarath
Re: Review :: Cloverfield
The movie definitely has its faults but I just found it really enjoyable, a whole lot of fun.
My only concern now is that they're already planning a sequel. Cloverfield to me seemed like one of those movies best left on its own.
Re: Review :: Cloverfield
i really didn't enjoy this movie, the shaky cam was more annoying than anything else - i totally agree with Belgarath, the injuries were just silly as moments later they were ignored.
bit of a disappointment for me as i was really looking forward to this movie!
Re: Review :: Cloverfield
I went to see this on the opening night and I have to say it's one of the best film's I have seen in the last couple of years. I especially enjoyed the refreshing medium through which it was filmed, as you say the YouTube style of production was totally original and very well executed adding to the suspense and bringing a realism to the movie.
I found the plot somewhat unbelievable which was the major disappointment for me, but then again it is a 'monster' flick so there is no harm in the outrageous I suppose.
My friend asked if I wanted to see it again and my answer was no... I am not sure if that is telling about the film but from my own perspective, I just do not want to watch it again so soon. Overall however I would totally recommend anyone to watch the film for its relative suspense, fair acting (I laughed quite a bit throughout, the guy behind the camera is v.funny) and great production.:)
Re: Review :: Cloverfield
Very enjoyable film, but for me, wasn't scary at all. It was like action horror, (like Final Destination) with no sinister edge. Another issue was just how hollywood it was - it could have been a little bit less hollywood, a little bit more realistic, and the actors should have looked less like models.
But overall great film :D
Re: Review :: Cloverfield
btw for the few people saying hand cam is new...
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
not that new lol
Re: Review :: Cloverfield
^As a film I much preferred that (BWP.) :)
Re: Review :: Cloverfield
Did anyone feel ill when watching it?

flea = flee
peaked = piqued
Not ex-girlfriend - long time friend he had feelings for
clambering = clamouring
Apart from that not a bad write up =)
Re: Review :: Cloverfield
What, so this isn't the film version of Deus Ex? ffs...
Re: Review :: Cloverfield
Woweee... Watched it last night and LOOOOVED it. I thought it was really good, the handycam point of view really immersed me - I half belived it was real!

Yeah man, I came out of it knowing I enjoyed it, but I just couldn't explain what I had just witnessed; I was shocked, dazed, confused, saddened etc, etc. I just didn't know what the hell to think tbh.
Re: Review :: Cloverfield
I watched this with the missus the other day.
I must say its an interesting perspective to view a monster flick, as in you don't see any heroes, see the government formulating plans or any of the usual nonsense.
In respect of this, I like it as you see the result of the government's plans which were obviously, evacuation, sending in the National Guard and eventually carpet bombing the monster.
Information about whats going is eaked out from likely sources such as televisions or the millitary personnel who don't actually know themselves but know that "whatever it is, it's winning".
Its a very well played out movie let down by a lack of depth or meaning and somewhat wafer thin characters and acting.
Re: Review :: Cloverfield
:( Everyone in college absolutely HATES it!!
I'm the only one who actually liked it. Any of you finding it like that?
Re: Review :: Cloverfield
To be honest and brief (hard to be anything else with a movie of this length) this was a big dissapointment (for me anyway), although the special effects were excellent and clearly this film had a big budget measures could have been taken to hire half decent writers, for me it seemed to start off badly and slowly and then followed a basic, uniform pattern and far be it from me to question the writing capabilities and dedication of the hired writing but it was as if they had either ran out of time or simply got bored of writers when they wrapped it up. Too many loose ends (obviously to leave rtoom for the in progress sequal) such as we do not actually find out what the strange creatures were we can just assume that they are a cross between dinosaur and squid. Also, where did they come from i mean it is not as if they could have just put on a raincoat, hat and glasses and strolled into the middle of Manhattan again we just assume that they were there and we do not question it. The camcorder based filming was basic and somewhat nausiating (like an over budgeted blair witch project) in my opinion 4/10
