It makes sense, having graphics on board even high end motherboards. Having my G80 based 8800GTS sitting idle while i'm browsing the internets is a huge waste of power - my system is drawing 243 watts as I write this. If the powerful graphics cards can be turned off when not in use it seems like a sensible thing to do. And hopefully the onboard chip can help out when playing games too.
Now thats dam smart. So while AMD as making clever stuff and make graphics cards that do what we need them to do, even playing games. Nvidia just keep adding more horse power to their cards and nothing really more...
Hang on... am I missing something? Where does it say you can run off of the IGP graphics and then run the discreet card when needed?
Wo, read the news. NVIDIA is introducing HybridPower on their NF 780a board, it allows you to shut completely shut down your 9800 GX2 or GTX. ATI doesn't have this capability.
you only NEED to switch off Nvidia VGA cards cos they draw such a load of power at idle. Compare that to the 10W AMD/ATI's cards draw at idle and you see why they dont NEED this feature.
What I wanna see if the 790GX in mATX form factor. The only board we've seen pics of is a full ATX.
Also 790GX has the new SB750 which according to reports has a "secret" overclocking feature that actually works!
Roll on 790GX, it's got me holding off that 780G mATX board!!
