Uhm if your BMI says you're overwight then you are overweight, seems simple to me. If you are overweight then you should know about it and do something about it, so surely this is a good thing.
3 months ago my BMI said I was overweight (borderline overweight) which was completely wrong as I was quite fit. I am definitely overweight now though, put on about 5kg in the last 2 months... damn exams, haven't been able to exercise at all!!
But its true, BMI is roughly correct for people who don't exercise...
I'm another non-believer in the BMI chart. I had a medical for work a year or so ago and the doctor advised me to loose a few pounds as I was on the border line to being overweight. The way she said it though, made it sounds like i was headed for an early death becasue of that 3 pounds. Skinny cow that she was![]()
BMI= bull sheet. Just look at your belt to see how many holes you are using
As Sim said, body fat %. Measured with callipers and not bathroom scales![]()
The thing is even if you're heavy with muscle, the fact that your body is heavier will shorten your life. OK so you can have a BMI that says you're obese and yet not be fat, but it's still unhealthy. Theres lots of research that shows that people with their BMI in the good range just live alot longer. That sucks for muscleheads like me but thems the breaks. I'm overweight even though my bodyfat is good and the fact is I'll likely not live nearly as long as my dad, who has basically always been skinny.

Don't worry mate, the statistics do not necessarily say that. A lot of research is done by people who do not understand stats properly. So there has been a lot of research done on medical trials by statisticians (eg meta analysis).
Just because you have high BMI and the average high BMI guy has a shorted expected life does not mean necessarily mean you are going to have a shorted expected life. If research was done conditional on muscle mass and body fat then more sensible conclusions can be derived. However, as it stands all the research tells us that if you pick a random individual, and his BMI is high and you know nothing else about the individual, he is more likely to die sooner. But if you pick an individual that has a high BMI but you know he is fit and muscular, then we cannot say anything about his expected life without further statistical experimentation.
btw, I am a master statistics student![]()
