Have to agree with that assessment...
I hope for AMD's sake that they've got a lot more up their sleeve, because those nVidia specs are mighty impressive...

@#$%! :confused: Umm hello? Does anyone pay attention to the rumor mills?
The HD 4850 (which we be hard launched shortly) is the "mid-range" offering. Ala HD 3850.
The HD 4870 (which should be paper launched shortly) is the "higher-end" offereing Ala HD 3870. The 4870 is getting slightly delayed due to GDDR5 Availability.
I haven't read anything about the HD 3950, but again. Note the 50 ending....please do the math.
Of course the xx50 offering will have GDDR3. They also aren't meant to be the faster, most expensive offerings either.

It's looking quite tasty on the red side at the moment. If they're not going to beat the greens this time around, it's going to be mighty close, though to be fair, I think they were a lot closer with the HD38x0s than most gave them credit for.
They could end up with the all-out fastest card again when the X2 comes along too (August I believe) as I've seen no mention of a GX2, and can't even begin to think how NV could get a GX2 made out of the GTX280 - it's so much fatter and hotter than the G92s that it would surely require at least 3 slots to make it possible. GTX260 may work, but it would still be uncomfortably toasty.

Wrong. That's just a silly, uniformed rumour from Fudzilla or somewhere.
The 3950 may well be a higher clocked revision of the RV670 chip.
The RV770 cards will be great from a performance/£ perspective, but obviously they will lack the outright performance of the nvidia offerings. However, they will be much less demanding in terms of power needed and will output a lot less heat. The TDP of the nvidia cards is ~250W, as opposed to the ~150W of the fastest RV770.
R700 versus the nvidia cards will be interesting.

Guys remember, that AMD/ATI are goign for the mainstream ala price/performance ratio as there main target and high end as a less important thing. Where as Nvidia are putting serious effort into the high end, be it at a high price tag.
Personally I think AMD/ATi are doing the right thing. I mean think about it, how many times have you bought the high end card, only to find you could easily have done with something less powefull in reality (excusing the benchmark and mines bigger than yours syndrome).
Long as AMD/ATI are close-ish to Nvidia and are much cheaper. I would esily go for them instead.

Aint that the truth! (I am however a NV Fan boy-went red once - hated it)

The real Situation here is the fact that Nvidia need real competition.. not this half assed attempt by ATI.
Why do they spend their time bothering to make the top cards an unreasonable prices?? Well..
Its kinda the same reason that concept cars are built. You need something to showcase your tech. F1 is also a good example.
Not to mention that if you bought a 8800GTX when it came out, you would still have an awesome card and got really good value for money!
I was very sadly disappointed with the 9800GTX I actually took it back and stuck with my 8800 GTS (G92).
A great example as to why competition is REALLY important. (Does anyone remember the geforce FX or GF 5 series??)
Its also a good thing that GFx cards are dropping in price so much because we now are starting to see a lot of people getting into PC gaming as a truly cost effective alternative to console.

AMD/ATI have the right idea. Fast cards with low power and fair prices. They are putting out some great products that make sense to me. If my gaming PC needs more than a 500W PSU there is a problem. Fast but inefficient is uncool.
