It's all good news to me =]
Re: Headlines - Intel drops price of top quad core by 40% to make room for Q9650
That gives the price of the E8600 as $266 which translates into £138.
I wonder how much they will actually be when they become available.

Well the Q9300 is currently $266 so presumably similar prices to that. From Scan's prices that'll be about £170.

AFAIK the quoted prices are for 1000 unit quantities, by the time you factor in tax, supply costs etc... it ends up a bit more than that.
I too would expect it to be about £170

E8600 is only dual core and the same priced quad core is Q9300 - I wonder which is faster for the gamer and every day use.

Well, if you look at the desktop cpu comparison chart on Tom's Hardware you get a good picture of how they compare. Obviously they don't have the very latest on there yet but comparing the E8500 with the Q6600 (exactly equivalent in price) the quad has an advantage in applications like 3d studio max (47 seconds as opposed to 60 seconds) but when you get to the games the dual core pulls out a significant lead.
The Quake 4 benchmark shows the Q6600 as giving 137.3 fps whereas the E8500 is much faster at 182.8fps. That's a 33% increase in frame rate for no extra money. It's only a little short of the Q9770 which does 183.7fps and in fact it's faster than the Q9650 by 3fps which Scan are currently listing at over £600.
I'd expect the E8600 to show a similar lead over the equivalent priced quad core.

Well buying a quad core a couple of months ago wasn't a wise move! :(

Has AMD got anything up its sleeve for this year to go head to head with Intel?

quite true. £170 is way more realistic to hit the retail.

That's all good news really, especially the amount of performance for money :)
Re: Headlines - Intel drops price of top quad core by 40% to make room for Q9650
That’s very good news for me as I am about to buy a 45nm Quad Core Q9550 2.83MHz in the next few days. I'm guessing that this price drop as not filtered though yet as Scan have them at £217.25
Re: Headlines - Intel drops price of top quad core by 40% to make room for Q9650
is there any price drop expected for e7200?
Re: Headlines - Intel drops price of top quad core by 40% to make room for Q9650
on another note, were there any news about e7100?

The price drops always seem to take a little more time to reach us, and for the retailers to adjust their prices accordingly :juggle:
