However I found out some years ago on my Pentium II 233 <cough> that big fat heatsinks like that are actually somewhat naff
that's fine if he wanted to try it out as a hobby or something but for minimal effort - TR HR-01 Plus without fan, AC S1/S2 passive and a passive PSU, for HDD, maybe a Scythe Quiet Drive enclosure.
There are better CPU and GPU choices in terms of heat/performance available too.
I bet it would look good as a steampunk jobbie
Don't Zalman make an uber expensive case that does the same job?

As scratch built cooling systems go that's impressive, too bad it didn't work too well... Looks like it might work though if it had a lot more heatpipes.

There are a lot of people trying to make silent PC’s and this effort, although interesting is hardly cutting edge. Even so, if it makes people realise that a good quality PC should be very quite, that’s no bad thing. The silent computer isn’t here yet, but its coming.
It's not hard to build a silent pc...
Big massive heatsink on a cool running cpu, bit ram heatsinks, big graphics card heatsink, no fans at all and an SSD, it might run hot, but it won't make a noise...

Unless you are in sound proof room I don't think you would hear something like a 500rpm scythe slipstream which added to a system like PeterStoba mentions would make a silent but hot system that would work, a silent and fairly cool system.
I have a completely passive PC.
Built inside a mCubed case, had it for ages now, must be at least a year... in fact is was when the AM2 4200+ EE was first released (and I mean first released)

Just re-built it with a new 780G motherboard motherboard and put the hard drive in a noise reducing enclosure. PSU is silent and passive too (http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=137420).
Works well as a HTPC
