He's right, some people do require something to show the size of their epeen, its like MS's gamer points. Saying that i did buy the Halo 3 Legendary set But i'm a Halo fanboy

On the other hand, are collectors editions really that important? As a frequent gamer, I'd have to admit that I never purchase collectors editions at all. The game is enough to suffice, and additional clutter never seems to appeal.
I've been guilty of buying CE games for 360, sometimes for the extra ingame content, sometimes for the art work. I never watch any of the extra DVD's that come with them, that just seems pointless. Just today i ordered my CE of Wrath of The Lich King, i love the art books, in fact one of my tattoo's (i love Elves) was taken from the TBC art book.

Art books usually seal it for me - my favourites so far are The Witcher and Guid Wars: Nightfall. Both have fantastic artbooks and soundtracks.

I'm not a big fan of other clutter, though I might have to get the fallout 3 lunchbox edition

Maybe I'm just counting my pennies too much. I just realised that I never buy collector edition DVDs either! Just don't see the use in the bonus discs that I never watch or the exclusive post cards that I'd forget I have...

I got the CoD4 special edition for the SAS stuff. I also really like hearing directly from the developers about how they make something, so I was pleased with that one

Re: News - Collector editions are a pissing contest, says Infinity Ward

i've had a look around my collection and i'm a little disappointed now, i thought i had more special/collectors editions of stuff..

    only found:
Warrior Kings:Battles - with some postcards
Mark of Chaos - nurgle pewter symbol, book, desk banners, soundtrack CD.
8" god of war figurine - poseable, the one with the flame sword things (won it in a competition)
Neverwinter Nights 2 - metal ring, 3" plastic troll, CD soundtrack.
    Oblivion - coin, map.

i've got way more DVDs that are special editions.. (it was nice having money once)

Had a look at my games and Forza 2 is the only limited edition game that I have. I do love the game, but even in this case I only purchased the limited edition as Blockbuster was selling it cheaper than the standard version!

I think this purely comes down to personal taste and depends on how much you love the games that u want to spend more money on collector edition. I play guild wars, own 3 campaigns and expansion, all in standard version, partly cause i came to the game a bit late but if i could i would have brought collector edition or pre-release version. Collector edition comes with nice bonus stuff.

Re: News - Collector editions are a pissing contest, says Infinity Ward

Out of around 30 PC games on my shelf only 2 are special/limited/collector editions (and the extras were pretty underwelming), whereas my DVD collection is largely the opposite. Of course that might have more to do with it mostly being anime, where anything that includes the soundtrack or artwork is an instant sell given that that can cost more to import than it does to buy an entire series...

So really it's a cold hearted choice of whether I want what is on offer.

Also my console games are for handhelds, don't think I've ever seen a special edition game for them.

Re: News - Collector editions are a pissing contest, says Infinity Ward

I buy collector's editions when they come with good soundtracks or fluff (fleshing out the in game world). Conversely, I NEVER buy DVDs with bonus content. I'll always go for a vanilla version since I only ever watch the main feature anyway. In fact, the only DVD I've owned/rented that I've been interested in any special features and commentaries is Firefly and Serenity.

I see no point in collectors edition, at the end of they day, millions are produced and tbh your not going to be selling dvd's for hundreds of pounds in a few years when they're so easy to pirate for free anyway

I like the collector's editions that come with huge maps and backstory - like Oblivion.

Maps i'd agree with. Extra books, cd's/dvd's full of the making of etc i'm just not interested in, and the ones with T-shirts that never fit and are only good for polishing the car
