Still way too bloody expensive!!
Im aliitle shocked by the price of the cheaper macbook! Heres me with £700 waiting for the new macbok to find its as expensive as the old top of the line black macbook!
Asus P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP & Intel Core 2 Duo Q6600 (3 GHz)
4GB OCZ Platinum Rev.2 6400 XTC, Leadtek GTX 280
Creative X-Fi, Lian Li V1100 Plus II & Dell 2408WFP
Laptop: Sony Vaio FZ18L
Uk price has gone from £699 to to the new lower price of £715 (maybe higher) while in the us it has dropped $99.
Apple re-calculated prices based on the lower exchange rate.
Last time round, the $ to £ was $1.9-2.00. Now, it's only $1.7.
So, the decrease is totally wiped out in price by apple taking account of the current exchange rate. The $999 plus VAT works out at about £680 (todays rate). - so Apple aren't overcharging us by hundreds or anything close. The lowest rate recently was $1.68 to £1 (only four days ago...), works out at £698 inc VAT. When Apple were working out the prices, they would have seen the currency falling and need to take account of that. The small amount on top of the ever-changing figure from doing the calculation is therefore a reasonable margin to protect them from any further currency falls and any extra shipping/overheads.
Personally, the new macbooks look very very nice. Shame I don't need a new laptop right now I still have my Core Duo 2 year old macbook, and picked up a Dell XPS 1530 at the beginning of summer. Maybe I can justify one next year, after a revision or two!
At least you get a superdrive (dvdrw) rather than just the combodrive (cdrw+dvd reader) for the extra £20 (new price is £719)

I was honestly thinking of getting one of the new models to compliment my pc (plus i still have never owned a laptop!) but it's still too expensive for me
I still hate the new keyboards. And, though the DVD writer is an upgrade, I'd rather pocket the 200 notes difference and get my equivalent C2D from Michael Dell.
Disappointing; I like OS X a lot.
Small, brown, furry.
That is one of the laziest pieces of cut-n-paste journalism i've ever read.
Yes, you've got to report this - provide a link to apple.com ... but please, don't just paraphrase and repeat all the crap that apple spill forth.
You're British .... stiffen your back, sleep on it and give us the verdict in the morning.
Interesting. As a likely purchaser of the new MBP there are a few things I love and a few things that irk me. The required glossy screen and the lack of a proper DVI connection (without getting ripped off for the adaptor) are a slight problem. On the other hand I really like the unibody, the new touchpad and the upgraded hardware.
I'm going to be in the market for a new lt soon, iwas thinking of the mbp, not sure now, they do look nice, though I tend to make my purchases on more than looks.
On the all aluminium one-block design of the mbp, will this make upgrading the ram more differcult?
The lack of a matte screen option on the Macbook Pro is really putting me off getting one.
I can understand the economies for Apple of just offering the glossy screen, but I'm sure there's a lot of designers/professional photographers out there that Apple have just alienated.
