i7's core 2 is yesterdays news, i7's are the future. if im going to drop 1k on a pc, i would rather drop it on a i7 then a core 2 that will probably only last me just a year

For the same amount of money, a core 2 based system will last you a lot longer!

Well, if that means you won't change anything for 3 years, I'd go Core2Duo.
If you see yourself changing the CPU in those 3 years, go i7.
But beware, intel have a track record of making later CPUs not work on the early motherboards..........

A good Core 2 won't limit you for at least the next 3 years, however with the money saved you will be able to get a much better graphics card, or cards, either at once or saving a pot of money to spread over the 3 years, and consequently that will last longer.
If Core i7 was only a bit more expensive then there's not enough of a saving to be made to be worth it, but while the CPU looks ok, the motherboards are horrendous and completely unreasonably priced - even disregarding the CPU, going to a Core 2 system could save you around £120 on the motherboard alone - that's a whole OC'd 4850!
