Ouch, those prices are high. I think I'll sit pretty on my Wolfdale for another year till the i7 becomes more affordable.
I'll never be able to afford this..
Seriously...
I guess its C2Q for now..
Me want Ultrabook
As mentioned in another thread, it doubted that it will become 'affordable' the prices may drop somewhat but the really affordable solutions will be the socket 1160 (or 1156) which will be the P55 and moe cut down versions of i7. The two wont be interchangable and the X58 is likely to remain quite highly priced. Take a look at the x48 mobo's they are still pretty expensive.
by jan some of these should be around the £200 mark if not lower
ah crap
940 is £450, best mobos £250 at least, DDR3 maybe £300? - £1k
ridiculaaaahs!! Can't see the prices coming down either judging by x48
yea prices are ridiculous, now I sort of having to go for all the basic ('cheap') components to make it somewhat affordable...
thats what happens when their is no competition. thanks AMD
i for one wont be jumping straight on the bandwagon i shall be waiting 6 months for there to be a good stock of the cpu's and other motherboards and the price of the ram to settle it doesn't make sense for me as i have a q6600 at 3.6ghz and 8gig of pc2 8000 i wont be making that much of a leap in performance.
For the guy who said buy the cheaper 920cpu and 3gig of lower spec ram that's daft as 3 months down the line you will be replacing the cpu and ram for the faster cheaper alternatives meaning instead of saving £500 you will be wasting it surely 99% of people have systems that they can live with for a few more months being the first to have the new stuff will cost you a fortune as it has for me many times with computer component's this time ive learnt my lesson and i will have the system i want instead of making do.
Don't be afraid that your life will end ...
.... be afraid that it will never begin
Why will he end up buying a faster cheaper alternative CPU? I cant see intel bringing out something far cheaper and far faster than the 920 in 6 months. As for the ram, you can always just put another 3gb in or another 6 to make 9, you wouldnt have to replace it. Its questioned how much difference faster ram will actually make with the none extreme chips atm, and its looking likely it will only run at 1066 stock and whatever overclock you get is how fast itl run.
I have been waiting for the upgrade that made sense to me (and of course the money to do it) as this computer was just a cheapo upgrade from my Opty cuz its was bottlenecking the crap out of my GPU so moving to i7 is defnately not making do.
a 3GHz Core2 is seriously bottlenecking a 320MB 8800 GTS?
If it is, it cannot be by much....and I would be surprised if it is at all.
If that really is your hardware, I honestly think i7 will be a gigantic disappointment unless you upgrade to dual or triple 4870x2 or GTX280

no u mis-read, my old opty system was bottlenecking my GPU which is why i got this lump of poo. Sorry it wasnt written very clearly.
I'm doubting the system in my specseven slightly holds a torch to the i7 + a 260 but when i get it il make sure to bench moth just to see how much improvement i get
