News - AMD launches Shanghai - its next generation of Opteron processors

Shanghai is effectively being positioned as the CPU that Barcelona should have been, but is it good enough to worry Intel?

What is it with wafer shots? There's a recession on, they should be selling all those chips!

They make it sound like Intel forces a new socket every time they release a new processor.
LGA775 needs an update (which will last a very long time)

Although, I must say if I had 200 processors, AMD would be the way to go.

Early benchmarks look like The 2.7 GHZ CPU has just about retaken the lead from Intel in certain Server based workloads.
Intel will get it back with nehalem but with the 4 socket ones around a year away AMD might have enough to make a bit of money in their most profitable area.
Power efficiency looks really good on them as well.
I'll be interested to see how well they perform on VMware in a 2 CPU configuration.

I wonder how much better the desktop one will be compared to the utterly rubbish Phenom for gaming?
