So they've priced the Black Edition at the same level as the i7 920, so it's still a case of top level AMD vs entry Intel, but it'll cost you somewhere between £100 and £300 less to go AMD purely because it uses older motherboards and RAM...
I think they might have something here, it's going to be interesting to see the launch overclocking results...

When will these be available?

January 8th according to the rumour mill

It might cost you less but I'll wager the performance would be worse. You could get probably get the Core 2 Quad alternative and save the same amount of money but have more performance than a Phenom. And of course the long term TCO is a factor, if the Phenom still uses more power then over a year that can add to the cost differential (more important maybe in a business many PCs than at home).
Of course we need reviews to see... and as ever AMDs light in the dark is integrated graphics chipsets, but even that is dimming thanks for Nvidia's 9400 for Core 2.

I'll wait for the benchmarks, I was planning to upgrade to a Core i7 but the cost of an x58 mobo is putting it over budget at the moment. I hadn't anticipated £200+.

The cost of X58 motherboards is completely stupid. This is a typical Intel thinking they can charge what they like when there's no one to compete with it...
This is why AMD must servive and strike back. If Intel had its way, we'd all be paying £200 for motherboards and a further £200 for a CPU..
I'd rather spend £200 on getting both and suffer a slight performance drop.
I currently have intel Core2duo but when the new Phenom comes out, as long as the pricing is correct, I will be jumping back on the AMD bandwaggon.

Same, Core 2 Duo at the moment but might go to AMD if the price is right, really want to wait for the AM3 chips though for the lower power draw.
Re: News - AMD Phenom II listings begin to appear, priced at sub-£200
From what I have read the majority of the AM3 chips (upto 2.8GHz) will be available February and the 3GHz (I assume Black Edition) in April.
Re: News - AMD Phenom II listings begin to appear, priced at sub-£200
same as brewster and plat, except already have the am2+ mobo so after selling the current phenom it will be a nice easy £100 upgrade
Re: News - AMD Phenom II listings begin to appear, priced at sub-£200
My next CPU purchase is likely to be an AMD one. But it won't be a Phenom of any sort.
I wish AMD the best of luck with these new CPUs, even though I doubt they can beat i7s. Personally I am more interested in the energy efficient Athlon range. Will they ever really bring out the Athlon 64 2000 ? Sure, it's single core, but... 8W! One of those with a 780G motherboard seems far more appealing to me right now, than any new high-end CPU.

I'm in no rush to upgrade :)
Did I just say that?

I've been impatiently waiting to switch over to an i7 for a while now.. but the pricing of chipsets is shocking.
I think i'll stick with my current system till they either drop to realistic pricing, or i'll switch back to AMD
