Hmm. So what will you be able to do with this card that you can't with a 4870 X2? Apart from swap it for a slightly newer second-hand car?

    290 watts.

For comparison, the hottest Intel CPU ever, the Irwindale Xeons (Prescott-based) were 130W

    yes...

but in the same vein, a 4870 has 800 whereas a GTX280 has 240.... and now which trumps which?

it's irrelevant to just refer to shaders, it is the whole architecture.

Alternatively the 4870x2 has 1600 cores while the gtx295 has 2400. You've got to compare like for like

Nope, not at all. In fact, i'm still not convinced by dual GPU solutions in their current form. When and if we see a dual-core GPU, with internal SLI (effectively) that doesn't require driver support to make games scale I think i'll be more convinced. Right now i've got nothing which doesn't run liquid smooth on my 280 at 1600x1200.

AMD and NVIDIA count their shaders differently or cores I think.
